Sako bolt design, IMHO, is far superior to Tikka and I own 6 Sako's and 2 Tikkas (just enough to let me form an opinion whistle). The dovetail fit of the Tikka bolt gives me pause for really hard use. Other than that, they are as slick and as accurate as the Sako's.

I bow to the comments on the Tikka bolt design. I don't have expertise to comment . I haven't looked either. I do know my T3 shot impressively well and very slick. I traded it for a Steyr and was not thrilled with my trade.Tikka is a very accurate rifle in 308. The older Remingtons are much better IMHO than what is now being sold. I never had a Remington that would not shoot MOA until 1994 or so. I never put much stock in the extractor argument.
I like the Sako very much and have about 6 or 7 of all vintages except the 85 (sold my 375). I can't see the price but the quality is there (other than the barrel problems). A few years ago I started to sell my L61R but then I realized it is the most consistantly accurate 30-06 I own.

There is no question I would opt for a Sako over any Remington model.

Bob257,

How do you like your A7's? I'm seriously considering one in .270WSM.

I have Remingtons and Sakos. I think that if you want a flawless, accurate rifle right out of the box you are more likely to get that with a Sako.

Last year, I was at a nationally known hunting and fishing store looking for a new bolt action rifle in 280 or 270WCF. The fellow at the gun counter showed me a new Remington 700 CDL that was a mess. The inlettting looked like it was done in a 7th grade shop class. The recoil pad looked like it was on the wrong rifle and the barrel was so bent, I don't think anyone could sight in this rifle and get it on paper at 100 yards. How does something this bad ever get shipped from Remington? Maybe the barrel was for an "urban tactical rifle" that was designed to shoot around corners?

the good news is that as the price of the Remington goes higher the Sako price does not look so bad next to it! I would have no problem owning either but if you ever wanted to rebarrel it which one would be easier to work with? I am sure Sako's are great rifles, the 375 H&H at 7.5 pounds keeps calling my name, on the other hand which rifle is lighter, which one feels best in your hands, which one shoulders and points the best for you? I would be surprised if either one would not shoot in a 308 but I could be wrong.

My new Sako 85 SM Finnlight has made me a lifetime convert.

Sako is in a class of its own.

With Wrongman700 at the helm, Remington will now offer only Walnut stocked 30-06's.

I own both.

The Sako 85 is the best, out-of-the-box, rifle that I have EVER owned. Ever!

My Remington Ti was an absolute total P.O.S.!

It should NEVER have been allowed out of the factory - the way it was. After many - many - hours of gunsmithing - it's now a fine rifle.

Be VERY afraid of Remington's quality control - or more precisely - the lack of it.

With Remington - what you get - is what you get.

I got a rifle that shot 2 1/2 inch best groups - a severely fouling barrel, with an interior swell - and a rifle that wouldn't feed the final round in the magazine.

Sako on the other hand GUARANTEES - not three - but FIVE shots - into an inch - at 100 yards - and with FACTORY ammo! Not only is it very accurate - it has a great trigger, great magazine-clip system, great, slicker-than-ice-on-ice, controlled-round feeding - and great recoil attenuation.

Here's how my (7lb!) 375H&H shot - with the cheapest factory ammo I could find. That was a six shot group - with one called flyer.

Brian has said it all. Tikkas are equally good at a lower price.
Remington's high point was the 721/722 family just plain ugly tack drivers. Yeah I have two custom H&Hs built on 700 Classic actions but the 244 needed a SAKO extractor to work and the 400 was basically remachined from the ground up.

$600 rifle (Tikka), $2000 scope (Schmidt), both about as good as they come.

I have only had 2 Remington rifle's in my life , and they were both 742's in .243 and .308, and i must say both were JUNK. I finally relized (late in life) to buy a decent rifle. I bought a Sako 75, s/s synthetic in .300 RUM, the best rifle i have ever owned , topped with a 3x9 zeiss, shoot's all day under 1 inch. The old saying , ya get what ya pay for.
