How much barrel steel is necessary? What I am trying to ask is: If you had, say, a 30-06 that you wanted rebored to .35 Whelen what muzzle diameter would you need to start with? Could any standard 22 in. bbl '06 be rebored? You get the idea. So any ideas? Sean

A good rule-of-thumb is ...the bore diameter plus 0.250" and that's the minimum so for a 35 Whelan which is 0.358" in diameter, the bore at the muzzle should be at least 0.608".<BR>The real answer, however, should be..."What is the gunsmith who is going to rebore your rifle comfortable with?" It might be more than this minimum.

Actually the problem comes when boring to your requested diameter the reamer hits a hard spot, say under the front sight ramp. A section of the barrel gets torn up. You are better to go lighter to start with say 8mm or .338. Then if you have a problem the next larger diameter is still an option.
