Thanks!

Why shoot an antiquated old round at deer when there's so many better out there?

One reason is because my 308 is the most accurate rifle I own for long range shots and the rifle and cartridge has the capability to kill a deer at greater distances than I'm willing to shoot at them.

I agree, I've killed deer with a 300RUM and a 450 Marlin, they didn't drop any faster or seem to be any more dead than the ones killed with a 243 and a 30-30, so, dead is dead.

BMT, Hogdgon lists 45 grains of varget behind the 175 sierra for 2690fps at 48,000 cup. A common match load is 46gr Varget under the 178 Hornady amax, usually runs about 2700-2750 form a 26inch barrel. To push past that I want a bit more case.

Barrel life is a major concideration for me - the .308 has good barrel life along with more than enough power for what I need.
I shoot a fair bit and don't want to have to rebarrel after a couple of thousand rounds.

I personally consider this a top notch thread, & I also think anyone considering buying a magnum should read it or talk to some of you gents.

As I related a while ago here at the campfire I went from a 30-30 to a 300 WBY (between the Winnie and Weatherby ... I chose the WBY for personal reasons) and after my first range session with that beast I was almost ready to sell it ... God my frigging shoulder hurt!! But with much perserverance and mucho money on ammo (before I started to think about reloading), my Roy and I came to an agreement ... I was going to shoot it and in turn it would be my favorite. Well those things have come to pass and my tolerance for recoil has grown and I'm comfortable with the Roy. I don't know if the average shooter would have taken the abuse until they developed a taste for it (padding on the shoulder helps too ). But I tend to be a little more stubborn than the average shooter.

The rewards for mastering (if one can call it mastering) my Weatheby are on the personal level and I take great pride in taking her into the field, its not a fancy Deluxe or Accumark, just a plain jane Sporter, but I am proud of that rifle. Do I recomend this for everyone ... NO ... but that is why we have all this experience here, to help guide a newbie in the sport into a direction that will hopefully lead them to a lifetime of enjoyment!!

Because a 308 is easier to find than a 7-08 or 260? Because a 308 is cheaper to feed than a 7-08 or 260?

Varmintsinc:

Thanx for the laod data. I bought a can of Varget and vbshootinrange and I began working up loads on Sat. 42 grains begat horrid accuracy. 44 grains got me to 1.6" groups. I am going to 45 grains next.

I am shooting Hornady Interbonds (165 grain). I should get to 46 grains and 2700 fps without a problem.

There won't be an issue with going to 47 grain, however--the case will be packed full at 46!

Here's an update on the my .308:

[Linked Image]

That's with a new scope (VXIII 1.75-6 matte/heavy dupe), new trigger (RifleBasix) and new shroud (Gre-Tan). I returned the Tubb pin because it weighed exactly the same as the one that came with the Gre-Tan. Oh, and a new coat of paint.

Here's the newest toy:

This is another Sisk, of course, a .338 Winchester. This sucker plain SHOOTS!!! She gets your attention, of course, but I'm thinking some rifles are going to be jealous in the safe while this one gets to go hunting. The paint I might change. The rifle is a no-doubt keeper.

Rick:

Sweet Rig and Love that Dog-Leg Bolt!

My next 308 is a scout (already on order). So I need a Leupie 2.5x IER. Whitetail says that the new and improved version will be available soon.

I ask that you place me first on the list when the 2005s arrive, OK? Talley QD rings? The rifle comes with an B-Square base.

Thanx,

BMT
