The rifle has a 30 in. Pac Nor barrel in sporter weight chambered in 7 Ultra.Shooting is done from a plywood portable bench so there is error built in.
I can get half m.o.a.groups out to 200 yds.on a good day with 150 gr.Scirocco bullets.The problem is that the first round from a cold barrel would fly high and left by 2 in. at 100 yds.This in relation to all the rest of the rounds fired on that same day,even with 5 min. cooling off.{ not much cooling at 100 degrees ambient }
By sanding on the barrel channel,the flyer would change position.I installed a rubber washer on the attaching screw between the tip and the metal.I've kept sanding until now it is now free from pressure with the screw tightened all the way.
Now the flyer problem is gone but my group size is doubled to one m.o.a. at 100 yds.I haven't shot at 200 or 250 yet since free floating it.
This is acceptable since it's a hunting rifle but it was nice seeing those small groups.Any ideas on how to get them back?

Hi Gene. One moa isn't bad. If you want more, how about experimenting with different hand loads ? You also might try it at extended range. It might not be bad at all at longer ranges. I've seen that happen.
I, for one, insist on free floated barrels. Even if it means a little less accuracy. At least the weather, or use of a sling, will not change your impact point. E

Evenin' E,I think I'm gonna try downloading it a little to see what happens.The load I settled on gives me a 3600 fps MV average.I'm going to reduce to the 3450 - 3500 range leaving everything else the same and see if the group tightens up appreciably.
Somebody,I think it was Celt,had a gizmo for no. ones to address fore end problems and I was sort of hoping to flush him out.'preciate your post and thanks for reminding me that an inch at a hundred aint all bad.You are right about extended ranges too.It crowds me to get 1 1/2 moa at 100 yards with my 338 ultra at times but 3 in 3inches at 270 yards happens pretty often.

Gene Wiliams.
There are some other fixes that also might help. Of course, a nice crisp 3lb trigger is one big help, but I assume you have had it done. Adding a Wolf high speed main spring also can take out some odd harmonics caused by the heavy and slower Ruger set-up.
I've had two NO. 1s -- a .280 and a .25 06 -- given that treatment along with free-floating and a relief screw set into the hanger that in effect keeps constant and adjustable metal to metal tension on the barrel. They are very accurate and dependable rifles.
The gunsmith who does this work is at Broad Creek Rifle Works in Delaware -- his E mail is BCRW4Gunsaol.com. Good luck. 1B
