A few days ago I had a 45-70 case head separate in my Marlin 1895. The case head and the first 1/4" of the case wall extracted, but now I have a brass "tube" stuck in my chamber. I have tried pushing it out with a 50 cal. cleaning brush on a cleaning rod, pushed in from the muzzle end; and I have tried extracting it with a dental pick; but it's really in there and won't come out easily. The chamber seems to have a little "lip" about 1/4" in, and what's left of the case is stuck behind that. I expect I will have to have a gunsmith remove it. However, do any of you have any ideas about anything I might do? (And what would the gunsmith do to get it out?)

Disassemble so that you may run the brush in from the breech. Push a tight brush into the case. Now pull it back. The bristles should grab the case and pull it back out as you extract the brush. This is the easiest.
Number two is a tap screwed into the case and pulled backward. You have to be POSITIVE you do not cut through the case. Mike

Big Brass,
If the bore brush attempt will not dislodge the case, try this.
Determine the correct sized tap(used to prepare holes for a screw)that can be screwed into the case, and carefully screw it in. Then push the assembly out with a rod pushed from the muzzle.

You can also chamber a dummy round HARD into the ruptured case, then knock it out with a cleaning rod from the muzzle. The dummy round will go in about a third of the way and stop. I hope this makes sense. It is easier to do than explain <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Flinch

In an old 303 Lee Enfield I carefully used a rattail file that goes in and grabs while I twist it and pull back.

Throw the gun in the freezer and a few hours later take it out. Heat the outside of the chamber with a hair drier until it starts to sweat and then push the rod down with the brush on the end. The chamber should expand before the shell inside the chamber and give enough play to push it out.

another trick I have used is to take a drill bit that is just a tad larger than the inside diameter of the brass & CAREFULLY screw it into the brass BY HAND. works like the tap idea but is softer so wont cut the chamber if a goof up is made.
Safest way is to buy a stuck case remover from Brownells.

When the case reptured, a ring of powder residue was left in the chamber, causing difficulty in removing the case. Crean the effected area with solvent, then spray the area with WD-40, stand the rifle up on the muzzel over nite. The WD will get between the chamber walls and the case, you will be able to push out the case then.

I have used E-Z Out screw extractors several times for just this problem. Penetrating oil does help, also.

The cerro-safe trick works well too, without much danger of scratching th bore.
