Done up in S30V, with Bois D'Ark handle slabs, here are two elegant versions of the D.H. Russell Belt Knife, by George S. Copeland of Alpine, Tennessee. Just happened upon these, thought some of y'all might like to see. You can click on the "KnifeForums" link for more info..

A couple more compliments to Mr. Grohmann and Mr. Russell, these coming from "Knives of Alaska".

They use D2 steel and are available in a variety of handle materials. One has a sharpened edge on the back of the blade for 1 3/4" back from the point. The other has a false edge there, instead.

When S.R. Johnson sees fit to copy another man's knife design, you know it is worthy of high praise.

This beauty has a blade of ATS-34. Nice piece of stag, too. Well out of my price range, but sure is easy on the eyes.

For the kangaroo hunter who doesn't want to pay the import taxes on a Grohmann/D.H. Russell belt knife, there's a local bloke who'll make its Australian cousin ..............

Dewey Knives

Blade is hollow ground D2. The full tang is extended beyond the handle (Fallkniven influence, also??). Handle looks comfy. It's the Swedish-German-Canadian 'roo skinner from Down Under.

Herter's Inc., of Waseca, Minnesota offered this very serviceable forgery (?) for sale as far back as the early 1950's, for .... maybe a couple U.S. dollars. Not sure who actually made the knife, but Chicago Cutlery is rumored to have possibly been involved, and/or maybe an outfit in Howard City, Michigan, known as the Olsen Company. Maybe someone here has the straight skinny on this?

This knife is currently for sale, BTW, but the price has gone up some.

R. Frigault Knives

The "Basadie/Chinto" set, in a hand-tooled leather piggyback sheath, made by Rick Frigault, of Niagara Falls, Ontario. This particular set features moose antler handles and blades of ATS-34.

Obviously, the "Basadie" was inspired by the D.H. Russell belt knife. Its blade measures 1/8" x 1.25" x 4.5".

The little "Chinto" utility knife was designed primarily to sever the windpipe of your 30-pointer. Blade length is 3".

All of Rick's "Hunter" knives can be made in your choice of ATS-34, 440C, D-2 or Damascus steels. Handle choices consist of G-10, Micarta (paper, linen, or canvas, and in several colors), Antler, Ivory, Ironwood and other stabilized woods. They are made via Stock Removal methods and the blades are flat ground. A handcrafted leather sheath is included.

Maybe you could get him to throw in a brass compass with the deal. (Did you ever get that Marble's Fieldcraft? ... Bloody it yet?)

I know of a guy who bought one of these piggyback sets, moose antler handles and all, and he uses them regularly, too. They're a little flashy for my tastes, and I like a simpler handle design. Finger grooves don't usually work out for me. Lotsa folks must like 'em, though.

As for the cost, if I was ready to spend that much cash on a user (and I'm not), it would most definitely go toward the S.R. Johnson knife, mentioned (and shown) earlier in this thread. Meeeeeowww!!

From Frost's of Sweden :

Here is the German/Canadian belt knife gone "Nordic".

The core of the Swedish laminated steel blade is typically hardened to 61-62 HRC. They have also incorporated the traditional, super-sharp Scandinavian single-bevel blade grind. Looks like fun to me! This is the first one of these I've seen, or heard of. Must check eBay.

It is no longer in production.

Don't know how long they were made, nor when production ended. Sure would like to get my hands on one or three, though. If anyone should happen to stumble upon more of these than you have need for .......

You obviously favor that blade style, you might like this Greco in A2, for about 95 bucks:

The most copied knife style I've ever seen and perhaps the most popular skinning knife of all time, has to be the Green River upswept skinner.

WMacD ..... You're on to me, dude!

That Greco would make for a good, stout, and practical camp knife, IMO, and the price seems reasonable, too. Looks like a modified Green River Sheep Skinner to me, a design that I have long favored for it's general usefulness.

My favorite "camp knife" to date has been the Grohmann #4 "Survival" knife. (Hooked on Grohmann's, I guess.) Mine is the flat-grind version with plain carbon steel blade (not shown here). The blade is 5.5" long, and 5/32" thick. Thinner would be better in the kitchen, but then it wouldn't qualify as a "survival knife", I suppose.

The handle is supremely comfortable. Basically, it's another sheep skinner with an off-set handle, which sure improves the handling qualities when preparing veggies, meat, etc. on a cutting board.

My wife is kinda partial to this one, Elf. The handle is made out of rocks. "Too darned heavy", I tell her,
but I'm not sure she's convinced.

May have to write to Santa, or the Easter Bunny ......

Thanks Walker, couldn't remember the name of the one cold steel knife that I think is actually worth a hoot. It's the all terrain hunter, I have had that one for a few years and like it for a cheapie.

They also made the best folder I've ever used it was called the twistmaster had a decent sort of eliptical blade on it, but I lost the dang thing along with a leather shell holder and 5 rounds of 45/70
