Take your "typical hunting rifle" from a totally un supported offhand position shoot 5 rounds into a 8" bull at 100 yds.
Typical hunting rifle: something like a Ruger 77R, Rem 700CDL, Win 70 FWT or Classic, Savage 11/110 or Stevens 200, not exceeding 10 lbs with or without a scope.

I can do that with my Savage 99 300 Savage Cal. open sights
And that's the only one I can do it with out of all my guns that have open sights.

Not very hard
I've done it many times with an M-16, my AR-15, and my O3A3.
With my scoped Model 700 it's even easier.

After the way I was shooting offhand yesterday(200 yards) pretty sure I couldn't get all 5 shots inside 8" at 100. Probably lucky to get 3 or 4 that close.
I really need to work on offhand shooting my centerfires, using my 17HMR with a light trigger and it's alot easier.

Here's some shots offhand at 100 yards (the shiny ones). A decently balanced rig with a good trigger isn't too difficult. I'd say a good percentage of deer I've shot have been offhand.

Barrel light (read butt heavy) give me the hardest time. I'm not much of a group maker, in fact I'd not be surprised if the majority of folks on could shoot much better groups from a bench then I can.
But I can hit [bleep] and seem to get better when you get me away from the bench. I'm sorta A.D.D. when dealing with benches and paper.

8" bull at a 100 yards, no problem. I prefer to take a rest when shooting at critters but most of the time I end up shooting off hand.

Yep, it does seem easier to hit with a little more weight out front.
Next time at the range(maybe tomorrow) I'm gonna paint the 100 yard gong and find out just how bad I am.

Cope in a plastic can is worse than shooting from a bench; both are anathemas.....

What's interesting is being a good shot and being a good game shot. There is a difference between shooting off a bench and shooting at game. I do agree with you Steely that its easier when you have a little weight forward. That's some good shootin' there offhand.
Unfortunately the vision in my right eye is going a little so open sights are no longer an option. I'll be perfectly honest, I do not practice enough offhand with my CF rifles and need to practice more. I'm like Sam, I may get a couple in there but know I can't get all 5. I know there are many better then me but at 100 yds if at all possible I like some kind of rest or a sitting, or prone position.

I could almost guarantee 4 out of 5 or better with my Marlin 1894.

Watched 458Lott doing better than that with his big bore revolver...

Do a fair bit of my shooting from prone, sitting, kneeling and standing. More fun for me than the bench. Seems useful too.

I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first
