My dad and I went on a quick hunt before work today and lucked into a banded bird. He was banded in August of 2008 in north-central North Dakota and made is way to Texas.

Two ducks came in flying opposite directions and we each shot once and had two splashes in the decoys. We walked out one bird shy of a limit, but got to work by 8:30. That's how to start a day! What a memory.

Alaways neat to learn a bit of the bird's history. I've not done the band thing for some time now. Is there a web site out there that provides instant feedback? If so, would someone post a link? 1Minute

I don't know about the website. We called and they gave us a little information about it and said they would send the details in the mail.

What part of ND? I want to know how that one got by me....

Been hunting ducks for 37 years and I've yet to shoot one with a band. Then some guy in Texas takes one that was banded in my home state.

Life isn't fair. frown

Congrats!

Well then you're not going to believe this. I took a guy last week who had never been on a "real" duck hunt. He'd went one other time, but they really didn't know what they were doing.

First duck that comes in, I tell him to shoot it...banded. First Mallard drake he'd ever shot. I was beside myself.

Congrats, a couple weeks a ago, three of us went goose hunting and shot 8 geese. Two of us shot banded ones. Mine is at the taxidermist right now.

The other guy was a newbie waterfowler and the third has been a serious waterfowler for many, many years and has never shot a banded antyhing. It was kind of funnny, but he wasn't too happy, so of course we had to give some extra ribbing.

I was in the biz for 11 years (USFWS), banded close to 10,000 ducks over several years. I even shot a few with jewelry on them!

Interesting to know. First one for me, probably my last too I'd bet.

In many years of waterfowl hunting I have only taken two banded ducks. I taught myself how to call with a PS Olt call when I was in my late 20's - the first duck I ever called in was a drake mallard that had been banded near Port Rowan ONT Canada in 8/25/82. I shot him in a cedar swamp off the Roanoke River in eastern NC on 1/19/85. They used to send you a small green certificate of appreciation from the USF&WS.

The second banded duck I shot was in eastern MD in early Jan 1995 with a friends new Benelli Black Eagle. The guns were new on the market then and he kept insisting that I give it a try (I was using my 870 SP). He spotted a lone mallard hen flying up the East Langford Branch of the Pomona River and pointed it out to me and handed me his shotgun - I shot the duck and when we recovered it we saw it had been banded by Remington Farms! He muttered about that band for the rest of the trip.
