For added excitement, go doggin' and stick the boar with a knife.

It ain't as hard or dangerous as it sounds IF big IF you got catch dogs that can and will strech a hog and not let go. That's why lots like pit bulls or pit crosses for catch dogs.

I've killed hogs with a bow, 54 cal. ML, and several different rifles. Last trip to Texas, I used my Marlin GG, .45-70, and 300 gr. nosler partitions. My longest shot was 185 yds. When I go again, I'll take my 45-70. Its fun to shoot piggies with the ole girlgrin.

Killed 'em with everything from a .22 on up. The fat on 'em tends to close up and they just don't bleed much so trailin' 'em is a pita. That's why we always try to head shoot 'em.

I used my .338 RCM last year...it worked really well regardless of where I hit them...head, neck or shoulders... grin.

One of my friends used a .308 and the other three used .223's. If there was a difference in the effect I couldn't see it, and we killed several dozen in the process.

Haven't decided what to take this year... whistle.

The only time I've ever seen a problem was on my first hog hunt when my buddy was using a .44 Super Blackhawk and max loaded 210 gr Sierra JHC's. We had a merry chase through the brush. On skinning the critter, it turns out that three (I think) of his bullets had simply flattened out and failed to penetrate.

This was long ago, maybe 25 years ago, and neither of us knew squat about heavy bullets from handguns. We learned.

That same hunt I put a 180 gr Nosler Partition from a .300 Win mag right through the heart of a hog. That worked rather well.

Regards, Guy
