Well I am positive we could kick this discusion around for a long while but sounds like you have had it with the to much recoil department. I don't know what your plans are for type of big game but I still keep coming back to my dual purpose model 70 Winchester in a 25/06 caliber! It works great on the deer and antelope and is hell on wheels for hunting those grounghogs, coyotes far out or close in mind you. It is just a fun rifle to shoot period.

for deer why do you need more than a .243 or .257 roberts? The Kimber montana's are real light. I had a model 7 in 308 with a bad experience but could happen with any rifle. For walking I sure would want a low power scope, I saw one of those hunting shows where a guy jumped up a deer and shot it with a hubblescope, guess it can be done.

How about a 250 Savage in a 20" barrel? I'd like to have a light bolt action in .35 Remington myself.

Since you are already loading for the 6.5/06AI, the .260 would be a cool option with 140's or the 125 Partition. Or you can go with whatever your favorite rifle would be in 7mm-08, .308, or 338 federal (I have my eye on the Hawkeye) CLB

Been leaning towards the .260. Just don't know as of yet. Won't be a ruger as I have not had very good luck with rugers in the past. I am thinking of the Model 7 predator in 243 but I am going to have to put some more thought in it. HAPPY HUNTING

Your 6mm/06AI and your .243 heavy barrel seem to overlap in the application department. I would rebarrel and restock the .243 to .260 or 7mm-08. If you like the .243, then rebarrel with that. I've always felt the .243, although adequate in most cases for deer, is a little light when the deer get big and the angles get tough, and personally prefer a .25 or larger. You have the opportunity to build exactly what you want using an action you already have. Go for it.

My Ruger 22" .257 Roberts is easily my favorite rifle. With +P loads it is right behind a .25-06.
Those that suggested a .260, 7m-08 or .308 Win in a Compact are on the right track IMHO. Light, easy to carry, plenty of the "right stuff" for deer and even elk.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

checkout the Marlin XL7 and XS7 for about 300 bones-my XL7C 270 weighs less than 8 lbs with a 3x9x40 leu on board-this out of the box stock rifle shoots like a heavy barrel varmint rifle!
