............Nice lookin rifle!.......That scope though, does seem a little large on that rifle???

I`d go a little more streamline and consider the 2.5-8x36 VX3. A 2.5x8 will do anything a 3x9 can do. And imo, that VX3 will look the best as well.

The best eye relief, making it easier to find game/targets. The best warranty, no questions asked. The best glass/coatings. My hunting buddy couldn't get a shot at a nice bull elk one eve. It was at sundown and the glare from the sun behind the bull led him to TAG SOUP! He had a high end Nikon. The most expensive scope on earth will have trouble when shooting into the sun. Just be sure to step outside with the optics and give it some testing before you make the purchase.

If he'll be using it the eastern woods for deer I would make sure it goes down to at least 3x. 2x even better. Hard to find those buggers in the scope when they're in close. I have Burris Fullfield IIs (2-7 and 4.5-14) and a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8. Each is very good.

Edit: very nice looking rifle!! and, the 4.5 was hard to use in the woods, hence the 2-7 for those conditions now.

i dont have enought for him to hunt in a ranch or any friends
he hunts in the national forest
he likes it but he hasnt seen a single deer this year
its just hard to bag one with all those irresponsible hunters poaching
so i dont want something expensive
something nice and simple

Seems to me a good fixed 4x or 6x scope would be what the doctor ordered. Maybe a good bino for looking.

for around $300 you can get a leupold vx1 4x12 with the varmint reticle

I got one for my winchester sporter 25-06 and I can hit stuff minute of angle out to 625 yards with it holding dead on the bottom hash mark

I highly recommend the new (made by Leupold) Redfield 3-9X40 at $149. I just put one on my Remington 700 in 7mm-08, and I couldn't be happier. I can assure you, you won't be disappointed. Excellent clarity, typical Leupold eye relief, tactile click adjustments (that are spot on), and the typical Leupold warranty.

Been waiting to hear of someone who has tried this new scope (I read Steelhead also bought one) - the new Redfield might end up owning the entry level scope market with a good product.

Leupold VXII 3-9x40. There are some really nice used ones in the classifieds.

I've been happy with a recent Nikon Monarch - after using nothing but Leupold for 30 years.

I'm thinking a 3-12x42 Nikon might be a good 'all around' scope - can find them on eBay between $300 and $350.

I have been looking at the Redfield 2-7x33 also. These scopes are really tempting at their current prices. The 33mm would look good on your .243

I can't believe Leupold would allow crap to go out the door as they relaunch Redfield. If they do, it will be a short-lived experiment and you will only be out $150.
