By MARY KLAUS, The Patriot-News
January 03, 2010, 3:48PM

A burglary suspect was shot and killed Saturday night during a confrontation with a store employee at Shermans Dale Beer & Beverage, state police at Newport said.

Perry County Coroner Michael Shalonis said he pronounced Jeffrey Thomas Harless, 25, of New Bloomfield, dead at the scene at 10:55 p.m. Saturday from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Police said that a store employee arrived after an alarm sounded at 9:44 p.m. Saturday. The employee entered, confronted a man with a weapon and shot him in the ensuing confrontation, according to police. They said that no charges have been filed in connection with the fatal shooting, the midstates first of 2010.

Anyone with information about the incident should call state police at Newport at 567-3110.

Sounds like he was shot during an armed robbery, by his own gun. Only thing mentioning alcohol was the store type.

That doesn't mean he was shot by his own gun, but only that he had a gun.

I will give you that. I don't know that a confrontation would have been reported if the employee had a weapon, maybe reported as a shootout?

Sounds like a happy ending to me. Steal and threaten a proprietor, be prepared to pay the dues.

This is why clear writing is important.

It could mean: The employee used his own weapon to confront an intruder.

Or: The employee discovered an armed intruder.
