Brads answer makes the most sense, but at this time I like my 338 win mag.

It would have to be my Sako 85 Short Mag in 300 WSM which I have yet to hunt with.
By the way, in case you missed it, Jeremiah was a bullfrog.

Depends - if horseback, it's an old Browning Safari 30-06; if afoot, it's Ruger RSM in .338 Win Mag, although a Ruger #1S in .300 H&H is coming n strong.

Ruger 77, 7x57, 160 gr bullet. If I score a tag this year I'll use a 6.5x55 Swede with 140 IL's.

I've killed them with the Wby 340 and 338 Win Mag. Used the 270 Win once. I just like the bigger heavier bullets, they work.

I suppose you can kill them with a sharp stick (arrow) if you know your limitations. I tend to feel that you can't kill something too dead and generally try to err on the side of too big rather than too small. I also am getting less fond of heavy recoil as I grow older and can shoot a light-recoiling rifle better than one with a real heavy kick. I used my old standby 7mm Rem Mag M70 on my first elk hunt last year and had a one shot kill. I plan on using a M70 .338WM with a muzzle brake this year if I can get it shooting as well as the 7mm shoots. That certainly does not mean I was dissatisfied with the 7mm but rather means that I have several rifles I want to use on game bigger than deer.

Here's my favorite it's now harvested cow elk for me 2 years in a row Turkish mauser done up by me original cost when bought in full military trim....$49.00 add a safety, and a scope base.(partially funded by the sale of bayonet, and other unused parts it came with). left it in 8x57 caliber, and it shoots remington 185 gr.core lokts at about 2650 fps

...... Rest of the group uses 340 weatherby or above. Nice thing about elk is that they're large enough that you can justify using as big a rifle as you want....even if it doesn't matter a whole lot That is a very nice thing about elk. A man deserves a cannon or... uh... two!

At the end of the day, Kimber MT 300 WSM... light to pack, and plenty of power near and far. 7.25lbs ready to rock...

I have two, an up-short (100 Yard) brush gun (.338 Federal) and the .340 Wea Mag for everything else. Got it covered.

I'm old so it is OK if I am slow in getting around to this. Favorite is beat up old Sako Hunter is 338WM with 210 Nosler Partition over 75 grains of 4831. 14 elk in 15 shots. Sound like a whopper? I can do better: Shot one a little far back. Concussion busted his heart, and the bullet broke his back. Figure that one out

I never hunted elk when I bought my first elk gun, a Winchester Model 70 Super Grade with BOSS in .338 Win Mag. When the 338 Ultra Mag came out, still never having hunted elk, I decided I was under gunned with the 338 Win. 338 RUM recoiled more than I was comfortable with, so, still never having hunted elk, I bought a Weatherby SBGM in 338/06. Then I decided that I was limiting my range too much, I bought a Browning A-Bolt in 300 Win Mag (with boss). I still have not hunted elk to date, so I bought a Sako 75 in 300 RUM. Then I just had to have a 7 RUM, so I boughgt a Remington 700 CDL, but never went elk hunting. I still have the Weatherby which is a great CA pig and black bear gun, but decided I wasn't an elk hunter and sold the rest of the bunch. Besides, the beating I took selling all those guns right after buying them made me to poor to afford going elk hunting. But... I have my eye on another Sako 300 RUM, hmmm!
