Those of us who have been pushing for lower Talley rings may have a "beware what you wish for" situation on our hands. Here are some admittedly poor quality photos of a Leupold 3.5-10x 40mm VX-3 in extra lows on a Win 70. It comes pretty close to hitting both the barrel and the bolt handle. Scopes with different shaped ocular and objective bells might not have worked out. There is a gap between the scope and barrel, but it is not much. The bottom of the scope is below the height of the barrel; if it had not started to taper down, they would not clear. This is a standard sporter taper barrel, by the way. In this photo I merely wrapped a towel around the scope for better contrast. For this particular scope, the extra lows are about ideal, but I can imagine some scopes not clearing. I don't feel like taking one of my Conquests off to see if it would fit, but I have hunch it might not.

How about the power selector, how close to the base?

Looks like a perfect fit to me, but I hear your note of caution with other combinations.

How about the power selector, how close to the base? I had the scope mounted far enough back that the power selector was not over the base. I slid it forward and it appears that the gap is .04," best as I can judge.

Looks like a perfect fit to me, but I hear your note of caution with other combinations. If your definition of "perfect fit" is nestled in as low as it possibly can be--as mine pretty much is--then this would be the picture in the dictionary.

Looks perfect to me as well. I'd be interested to know if it'll fit a Rem 700 as well with that size scope.

On my 700 with a 4.5X14X40 (1"version)it is about 1/8 from the barrel which is a #1 Hart. would be really close with a factory barrel or a shorter scope. Bolt clearence ok. Regarding the power ring it is very close and I can just get the scope forward enough not to be a problem...and I tend to crawl the stock a bit.
Still going to be really tight with a lot of scopes.

Called Talley today... Kimber 8400 X-lows are being made right now and will be available in a month.
I'll be putting a pair on my 300 WSM.

Great new. I've been after Talley to make an extra low rings for some time. The lows can be too high when running a McMillan Classic. I've got to pick up a couple pair.

Ordered a set here for my 7mm-08 SS a-bolt. Should be the ticket with that 60 degree bolt throw and get me to an even 7# scoped with a Leupold 2-7.

Also looks perfect for my 2.5-8's and 6X36's. Great news!

And I intended my post to be a more hurried addition to your earlier photo essay. One reason I added mine is that yours is based off a Remington action, and this is Winchester. Because the tolerances are so tight, some combinations of scope/ring/receiver may work and others not.

We need Rick to stick your thread and mine to the top.

If he would sticky yours, I will add my photos to it--that will keep them in one place. Then other people might add others and we could end up with a reasonably comprehensive archive.

UT, got a side view of the entire setup? Do these show what you want? (I slapped the action I am working on in an old stock--thus the white dust in the checkering and the lack of a trigger.)
