Americans flock to Canada's immigration Web site By David Ljunggren OTTAWA (Reuters) - The number of U.S. citizens visiting Canada's main immigration Web site has shot up six-fold as Americans flirt with the idea of abandoning their homeland after President George W. Bush's election win this week. "When we looked at the first day after the election, November 3, our Web site hit a new high, almost double the previous record high," immigration ministry spokeswoman Maria Iadinardi said on Friday. On an average day some 20,000 people in the United States log onto the Web site, www.cic.gc.ca -- a figure which rocketed to 115,016 on Wednesday. The number of U.S. visits settled down to 65,803 on Thursday, still well above the norm. Bush's victory sparked speculation that disconsolate Democrats and others might decide to start a new life in Canada, a land that tilts more to the left than the United States. Would-be immigrants to Canada can apply to become permanent resident, a process that often takes a year. The other main way to move north on a long-term basis is to find a job, which requires a work permit. But please spare the sob stories. Asked whether an applicant would be looked upon more sympathetically if they claimed to be a sad Democrat seeking to escape four more years of Bush, Iadinardi replied: "There would be no weight given to statements of feelings." Canada is one of the few major nations with an large-scale immigration policy. Ottawa is seeking to attract between 220,000 and 240,000 newcomers next year. "Let's face it, we have a population of a little over 32 million and we definitely need permanent residents to come to Canada," said Iadinardi. "If we could meet (the 2005) target and go above it, the more the merrier." But right now it is too early to say whether the increased interest will result in more applications. "There is no unusual activity occurring at our visa missions (in the United States). Having someone who intends to come to Canada is not the same as someone actually putting in an application," said Iadinardi. "We'll only find out whether there has been an increase in applications in six months." The waiting time to become a citizen is shorter for people married to Canadians, which prompted the birth of a satirical Web site called www.marryanamerican.ca.The idea of increased immigration by unhappy Americans is triggering some amusement in Canada. Commentator Thane Burnett of the Ottawa Sun newspaper wrote a tongue-in-cheek guide to would-be new citizens on Friday. "As Canadians, you'll have to learn to embrace and use all the products and culture of Americans, while bad-mouthing their way of life," he said. link

I can definitely say, "those are not the immigrants we want to see coming here". I can't say the last group of American Mass immigrant (the Vietnem Draft Dodgers) were of huge benefit to Canada. They should just grow up and accept the facts, they are not on the same page as Mainstream America.

Why did our forefathers come to the United States? Many of the same reasons their children are thinking about leaving?
High rates of poverty . High rates of unemplyment. A widening gap between those do nothing and have more and those work hard and have less. Politics controlled by the religious right. The nation being led by chicken-hawk neo-cons.
And it sure isn't going to get any better now that that little monkey from Texas is a lame duck.

And it sure isn't going to get any better now that that little monkey from Texas is a lame duck. Poverty levels and unemployment levels are at low levels historically. I'm at best a Jeffersonian type Deist, and I'm not feeling persecuted. But, if you really feel like you need to leave, well then you have my best wishes. Regards, Scott

Haggis,
If you don't mind, would you tell us a couple of things that Kerry would have done in your communty to help the locals? If you can't do that, tell us what he would have done nationally that would help any community.
I asked a fellow at work and he started talking about the war. That is not the question.

Canadian immigration policies are now and have been an absolute national disaster and disgrace since the Vietnam era. We have let in scum from all over the world and now actually are denied access to government jobs which are reserved for "persons of colour", this usually means East Indian Sikhs. They, along with Muslims and Tamils, use this country as a training ground and fund raising base for terrorist activities in their homelands.
I had a lot of experience with DamnYankee Dodgers, DO NOT send any more homos, dopesmokers, draftdodgers or wife-swapping abortionist babykillers north; however, ALL other Yanks are very welcome here. I agree, GWB is not my ideal President of your great Republic, but, gawd, that Kerry almost makes Slick Willy look good!

Yeah I heard it is a race to see who can get there first... the lesbians got off to an early lead because they started packing lickety-split, but the gays are bound to win...
They already have their sh1t packed...

We have let in scum from all over the world... I vividly remember late 1993 when it came out that the wife of multi-millionaire Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid, the target of the disastrous Battle of Mogadishu in which 18 U.S. Servicemen were killed (the subject of the book and movie Blackhawk Down ) was living in a luxury townhouse in London, Ontario drawing some $2,000 a month in welfare... ...and now actually are denied access to government jobs which are reserved for "persons of colour", this usually means East Indian Sikhs After years of watching the near 100% Sikh security personnel at Toronto's Pearson airport grow increasingly more belligerent and abusive to travelers of Caucasian and Asian extraction while favoring those "more similar to themselves" shall we say, to the point where it is almost standard procedure that these people are moved to the front of lines, personally escorted to flights and actually allowed to pass through security with cursory checks I know many business travelers who refuse to pass through there and routinely pay extra money and spend many extra hours traveling to reach Canadian destinations....
