Hopefully I'm not just rehashing an old subject, I couldn't find anything in the archives about this.
Why wasn't a 25-08 cartridge ever popular. Is it simply the Roberts, Savage, 25-284's already covering the base? It's never stopped wildcatters in other situations.
Just curious, never read much about it.
Thanks,
Scott

I believe this one was gone over pretty thoroughly recently. You might do a search.

John, I've never understood how to do a good search. If somebody would link to this conversation I'd appreciate it. I'll save the rehashing.

Thanks,
Scott 25 Souper. I built one in the late 80's. Shot a crazy bovine cow for the rancher where I was guiding in front of several hunting clients--one of them was so impressed with the cartridge/rifle he made me an offer I couldn't refuse. So I sold it to him on the spot Never got around to building another--besides, probably won't do anything the 243 won't do.............. Casey

The .25-08 WILL NOT DO what a .257 Roberts will do.
Kind of like what .25 WSSM would not do a .25-06 would.
In fact my .257 Roberts barks at the heels of my .25-06.

True...but that didn't stop the .338 Federal from becoming at least mildly popular. I've long been curious about the .25 Souper too, as it falls straight between the .250-3000 (got one) and the .257 Roberts (got one). I don't have a big need for one, but if I were looking to acquire a .25 caliber rifle, I would think very seriously about this one...it does everything I like a .257 to do, and fits a hair better in a short action than a .257 Roberts (.25-7x57). And it would be easy to use .243 brass bumped up; loading it with a .257 bullet would make it clearly superior to the .243, which I really don't like anyway. I currently make brass for my 6.5x54K from .243 brass, so it does have utility . A .25-08 could be very cool... Dennis

In fact my .257 Roberts barks at the heels of my .25-06. 25 Souper ~2950 fps for 117gr Sierra .25-06 ~3100 fps 117 gr. Sierra .25 WSSM (I didn't own it long) ~2950 fps 117gr Not sure what a .257 Bob will do, but based on the loads I've seen listed for it (~3000 fps), it doesn't seem all that differen from these. Anyway, I don't see a lot of practical difference in any of them.

One of the things that was really hashed over the last time we discussed this was whether the .257 Roberts actually "works" in a short (2.8") magazine. In my experience it does, since it was dsigned from the get-go for an OAl of around 2.8", but a lot of people are pretty sensitive to how deep heavier bullets are seated in the Roberts at that length. Of course, the .257 will hold as much or more powder than the .25-08 even so, but....
The .257 has about a 2-grain powder advantage over the .25-08, or about 4%. This means it will have about a 1% advantage over the .25-08 in muzzle velocity when loaded to the same pressure in the same length barrel, or around 30 fps--if you can find that on your chronograph. This is when both are loaded to 2.8" or so OAL.
I must be lousy at doing searches too, as I can't come up with the last thread on this subject.

The .260 Rem can do anything the .25-08 (or .25 Souper) can do, and do it better (or at the very least as well). For anyone wanting to limit themselves to less aerodynamic (lower BC) bullets than you find with the 6.5mm ones, I would think the .250 Sav and .257 Roberts would fit the bill.

Thanks Steelhead. You guys can let this one die if you want. I'm just curious.
As an aside, maybe you could explain how you can do searches so much better than I. I stopped using search because it came up with so little.
Thanks,
Scott

It's a good thing I bought my 722 and started shooting game in 1982...by the time I heard the .257 Roberts wasn't that good and shouldn't be in a short action, I had killed a bunch of stuff. Just like everyone else who has one... . Dennis

Kimber7man,
The NULA Bob doesn't qualify as a "true" shot action, because bullets can be seated out to 2.95"....
