Assuming both of these guns were the same price, which would you choose and why?

The one which feels most comfortable to you. Can't go wrong.

Both are good - If I wanted a snubbie, then the 66 is more elegant and I like the looks better. For a 4" shooter, I'd go for the ruger as they are overbuilt and pretty darn durable.

I've owned both. I have a Ruger now.

Both are quality revolvers, but long term, I think the Ruger is more durable than the K-Frame S&W .357's.

..neither. For about the same money try a GP100... Have owned 19s and SSixs as well as several other .357 DA revolvers but for the size the GP100 is the toughest.

Grips can be had that will fit a lot of hand sizes and the fast change front sight is great.

No question about it. I'd choose the S&W, although theoretically the Ruger might be better at tolerating a constant diet of Magnum. S&W has the better trigger action (both) and the higher quality over all. It's also lighter and sleeker. Better looking, too.

S&W, but only if it doesn't have foolish lock on the sideplate.

Does the Smith have a stainless steel front blade? Some of the first ones did before they started putting a pinned in blued blade or red ramp front. Those stainless ones are real hard to line up clearly.

Ruger put a pinned blue blade in from the start and then a red ramp.

Smith gets the nod for trigger pull and variety of aftermarket grips if that's of any importance to you.

I never wore out a Smith K-frame .357 but then I never owned one long enough to do so. Unless you were going to shoot nothing but firewalled loads or a lot of hot 125 grain loads I don't think the robustness of the Smith would get to be an issue.

Decision should best be made like Wahoo said - just pick the one that feels best in your hand.

Yeah, the only time the K Magnums had verified problems was when police agencies required that all practice shooting be done with full powered Magnum 125 grain loads. After a few years of this they started having problems with them. The idea behind the K Magnums was that most practice would be done with .38 Special, and they'd have the option of carrying either Magnum or +p Special for duty. Handled this way, each gun would have had a service life equal to the service life of a typical police officer.

The K's will hold up much better shooting 158 grainers in 357 mag rather than 125's

S&W. Much better trigger break. Ruger makes good guns, but even the reworked ones I've played with don't have as good a trigger as the Smiths I've shot. E

Eremicus nailed it. smiths have better triggers. I've got a 686 and a security 6, both have had action work, and the smith is much better. I like the feel of the ruger better though.

I am with Hawk on this, plus resale will be higher on the Smith should you ever decide to part with it.
