I've gone to soft cast fer my 45-70 load. Used the Rem 405 on a couple elk. Pushed it with IMR 4064 an' it usually went clean thru. Did find one slug on the off-hand shoulder of a cow, an' it was a perfect 1-1/2 " mushroom. I will agree with Ellie May though, a 45-70 bullet don't have to expand much. Dang, now I wanna go shoot another elk with my ol' trusty '86. 'Spose I could git a cow tag, but the freezer's full an' we ain't got mouths enuff to finish two elk off in a year. Ever think 'bout how lil' we hunt an' how much we talk 'bout huntin'?

I got my bullets from the Bullshop, which used to be located in Delta Junction Alaska, he has since relocated to Fairview Montana. http://www.midrivers.com/~bullshop
<br> He is a very decent guy. I have had excellent results with these bullets, but from a Ruger #1, the load of which is beyond that of a Marlin. I now have a new Stainless Guide Gun, and will be working up loads using H322, and IMR 3031. I will start with 48 grains of H322, and 46 grains of IMR 3031, I will work up until either recoil, or 51 grs of H322(maximum) or 49 grains of IMR 3031(again maximum). Dan who owns the Bullshop can also give you advice, as he has mucho experience with lever actions of all calibers.

I've been gone a while. But now I'm back. And I noticed that this thread is still straggling along. So I thought I'd mention what I'd learned in the last year.

<br>I've been loading the 400gr Speer with IMR3031. 46gr give me right at 1500fps in my 22" 1895. 48gr ups that to 1600fps. That is considerably more than the manuals list. Maybe it's my lot of powder, or maybe it's the case capacity, I don't know. Just FYI in case anybody else is loading the same powder in Rem cases and relying on the manual for estimated velocities. Don't believe anything you read, chrono it! -al

I'm usin' 48 grains of 3031 with my '86. It's got a long (26") barrel an' a metal buttplate, an' I should probly use a slower burnin' powder fer best velocity. But its too dang painful to shoot a bunch off the bench. So I stick with the tried an' true. Anybody got a sure fire improvement fer this rifle I'm open to hearin' it.

I found another way to get 1550 fps with the 405 Remington bullet. I am using 31 grains of IMR 4227, Winchester WLR primer in PMC cases to get the desired velocity. Great accuracy, mild recoil, low report and flash but best of all non existant powder residue. I am using the LEE factory crimp die and crimping in front of the forward cannelure a bit.
