I usally hunt with either a 45/70 or a 44 mag revolver.I occasionally hunt with my Marlin 336cs in 30/30.The 30/30 is a great deer gun.

Deerblaster,
Welcome to the campfire. I had a Marlin 336 .30-30 that was (is) eye-poppin' accurate with 150 gr. Speers. I gave it to my daughter ... great deer gun in it's element. (Old Winchesters are fine with me, too.) I'm also more than a little fond of the .35 Rem. in the Marlin 336, and use it often. God bless the lever action. If you aren't hooked by the fancy rifles and scopes, just pick up the old 30 (or 35) by the door and bring home the meat!
Nostalgic isn't it?

Well, not quite a Marlin 30/30 but close; I still hunt with either a Winchester M94 in 30/30 or a Winchester M71 in 348 WCF. I like the speed of handling with these two rifles, the M94 uses the factory sites, but the M71 is equiped with an old Lyman 56 receiver mounted peep. I really like them both. Odessa

i started out deer hunting in 1975 with a 30/30, i soon traded up to a .270 and never looked back, but last year, with the dawn of the new millinium, i took a step backwards, bought a Marlin 336 cowboy in 30/30, and hunted with it, it dropped my buck just as fast as the .270 does, and i found it very satisfying to hunt with the 100+ year old cartridge, dont let anyone tell ya different, the 30/30 makes as much sense today as it did back in 1895...gutpile

I have an old Glenfield 30A, which is basically a Marlin with a cheap stock for Sears or Monkey Wards or whoever sold them. The "wood" (I think it's wood) is butt-ugly, with cheesy pressed checkering, but the trigger and the 100yd accuracy are as good as any rifle I own, plus I shot my first mulie buck with it (and others), so I can't bear to part with it. Maybe I'll restock it with walnut. Or maybe I should just leave it alone for the sake of individuality. I've never seen one quite like it. Ain't nuthin wrong with the .30-30. I intend to kill an elk with it one of these times. -al

My first deer rifle was an old M94 32Spl, still tote it sometimes in deer season if I'm milling around in thick stuff. If I was buying my first-ever 30-30 right now, it'd likely be a Marlin. I have seen far too many of them things shoot good to want anything else in a new 30-30.
If three or more people think you're a dimwit, chances are at least one of them is right.

I have a 336 and it is good up to 150yd. I have killed whitetails with it before. I do not favor the gun much because the ballistics are not the best fo long ranges.

I have both a Marlin 336 & a Win 94 in 30-30. They are both fine rifles when used sensibly & in the proper environment. I love mine.

My first centerfire rifle was a Model 94 in 30-30 back in 1962. I've shot a truck load of deer, antelope and elk with bolt actions since. But my best whitetail was with that old 94. Like the silly youngster I was, I screwed it up tinkering with it and finally traded it off.
Older and wiser, I bought a 94 of same vintage a couple years ago. Recently I picked up a Marlin 336 (1972 mfg.) in 35 Rem. I plan to do my antelope, deer, and elk hunting with the two lever actions this year. Both are set up with Williams receiver sights. My '06 and 35 Whelen may just sit out the entire season if all goes well.
After all hunting should be safe first, fun second, and technically efficient last of all. Within personal accuracy limits the levers can deliver it all.

Dear Blaster,
I don't have a Marlin,but I watched my Buddy,drop a buck at 125 measured yards,OFFHAND,with an old Model 36,not the new 336.
Now,I'm a lever action guy;I bought a winchester 94 last year, and droppd a buck with it last Fall.
I'm really happy with it,but I still think a lot of the Marlin.

I only recently got into hunting and shooting. I went to a gun shop and picked up the cheapest thing they had. I know, not a very smart thing. I lucked out though. got a model 94 winchester with a weaver scope. The gun is as old as I am. 1977. But it works great. I do like the marlin better because of the side action. I could never line my scope up right, so I ditched it and is pretty acurate with just the old iron sights. anyone know of a good sight for this gun that is not too much money?

Well I must say I like the 30-30, I hunt mostly with my 25-06 but my old Winchester 94 shoots well and it still is a great bush gun so you can't go wrong with it.

Count me in with the 30/30 believers. I bought a 336W last year, my Christmas present to myself. Finally got to put a scope on it a few weeks before deer season, got some handloads shooting good through it, and killed a doe the 2nd weekend. It was my first deer with this rifle and my first "reload" kill. Kudos for the 150 gr. Speers. I already have another rifle on the way for next year, but my 336 will be with me for a long time to come.
