MrBill,

Limmer has a few boot styles from light to heavy duty hikers. The most popular boot and the one which they built their name on is the Standard. The Standard is produced in two models. The long standing tradtional hand made version of the Standard is $600.00 and from what I have heard currently has a four year waiting period. There is a second version of the Standards which is made to Limmers specs in I believe Germany. This version comes in the usual sizes and naturally is not made for "your foot" and so is half the price.

Check out their website.

The boots made by Charley are probably the finest I have seen since I started hiking in 1956 and he can and does adjust rocker, stiffness, weight and fit to your specific requirements.

Kutenay,

It's a real stroke of luck to find you on this site. A person simply can't ask for a better person to judge boots than a master bootfitter. I'm also lucky to know the head bootfitter at a large Seattle Flagship outdoor store, and between the two of you I am getting some wonderful advice. Your comments about Van Gorkom's echo those I've heard from others. My understanding is that where Charles shines bigtime is the personal attention he gives towards determining the right size and fit. I've balked at the prices before, but maybe I'll start getting serious about a pair of boots. When I start thinking about it, I've probably spent close to the amount he charges, on boots that haven't fitted me, over the last few years (did that statement make sense?).

Appreciate your advice very much. Also, on the topic of Schnee's, I examined a pair of them many years ago at an outdoor show and they look to be extremely well made boots for cold weather.

Cliff

ps - Agree with you on the old boots of the 70s & 80s (Raichle, Kastinger, Galiber, Pontvert, etc.) I have a pair of Raichle Rotondo 9.5 W's that are not even broken in yet, which I may put up for sale here. They just don't fit me. I'd rather see them go to someone here rather than on Ebay.

I had Charles Van Gorkum build me a pair of boots this year. Now bear in mind I'm Texas boy that gets into the high country when I can. Charley's boots required very little break-in, and have been the most comfortable, easy on my feet boots I have ever owned. Frankly, I didn't know boots could be this nice. He gets my vote as the best.

No words of mine can hope to convey to you the ringing joy and hope embodied in that spontaneous yell: The Americans are coming; at last they are coming!

I hadnt the heart to disillusion them.

I have a pair of the Limmer Lightweights (non-custom). My understanding is that they are made to Limmer specs by Meindl in Germany. Lightweight is not a real apt description. They are the stoutest boots I've ever owned. I have not used mine in the field as I found some Chacos at the same time that fit my feet like they were custom made. My impression though based on wearing them around the house a bit and close inspection is that the Limmers are lifetime boots with great ankle support. If they fit your foot, the production models are not a bad deal for the quality. I looked into the custom built ones before I found these and can't reconcile myself to the $650 projected cost and four year wait.

P.S. If anyone out there wears a 12D and is greatly excited by the prospects of new Limmers, let me know. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
