Have a #3 rock on my .257 Roy and think it just about perfect...sitting in an McMillan Edge with scope comes in a 7.38lbs I'd have to agree, thats perfect specs for a 7 mag.

Been thinking about fluting the barrel too fellas...;)
How about the CDL SF or LVSF contours?
Or are those basically factory magnum tapers fluted?
How close is the Rock #3 to the factory Remington magnum contour?
Hey BX, do you remember the specs on the Sisk 7mm we had?
I seem to remember it having a pretty stout contour?
Thx!

The sisk was a #4 hart if I remember correctly with a regular weight McMillan. The action was a few ounces heavier than a 700. Regretfully the rife weighed in in the mid 8's or I'd still have it.

Thanks for the reference Dan! How long is the shank? Looks about an 1.0"? BX, yeah, I knew I shouldn't have sold that rig off

Not even an inch. Here's a close-up. You can see the taper starting pretty much at the recoil lug. I had my smith cut it pretty short to match the stock, which was inletted for a Remington Magnum contour. By the way, there's not a thing I'd change on this rifle. It's been beat up pretty good. All sorts of nicks and scratches on the scope and it always holds zero. In fact I shot two doe with it yesterday. -Dan

You won't meet weight with either, if you are running a std fill McMillan or laminate. Concur. A #3 in a McMillan Edge would be the shizzle. FoSho!

You're correct, the LVSF is a fluted magnum contour. A #3 Rock is going to be very close to a factory Remington mag contour. My measurement of my M700 300 RUM magnum factory contour barrel (and similar to Lilja's) is almost exactly the same as the Rock #4, not #3. Measurements are as follows: 1.2" shank diameter, 0.84" at start of barrel taper (@ end of shank taper) and .650" muzzle at 26" barrel length. Weight is 3 lbs. Rock #3 is closer to the standard factory contour (30-06,270, etc)

You may be correct. I'll punch it up at work tomorrow in AutoCAD and see. A lot depends on what length you cut the shank to.

Yeas, please let us know. I too am struggling to decide on a 7mmRM contour, but I am leaning towards factory magnum contour with a 2.5" shank or #5 fluted cut to 2.5" shank ? From the posts here, maybe #4 would be just right.

Clark98ut, your barrel looks quit a bit heavier than my #3 rock. Yours appears to be a #4. I could be wrong though.

I've got a fluted #4 and in retrospect would have gone unfluted 3 or even 2. As it stands, it is a helluva plains rifle.

Clark98ut, your barrel looks quit a bit heavier than my #3 rock. Yours appears to be a #4. I could be wrong though. I'll have to measure it when I get home. I actually bought the barrel here at the Fire (unchambered) and sent it to Karl to have him do the flutes. Ok, on to the measurements. I've got a ton of these contours drawn up in AutoCAD. It allows me to really compare one to the next. Rock #3 vs. Rem. Mag: The Rock #3 is 0.04" smaller at the muzzle than the Rem Mag contour. The taper on the No. 3 is less gradual than the Mag contour. Rock #4 vs. Rem. Mag: The Rock #4 is slightly larger, but very close to the Rem Mag contour, being less than 0.01" larger at the muzzle. The big difference is that a No. 4 has an inch more shank length. Of course that could be cut to match the Mag contour if you wanted. If you compare them from the point the barrel begins to taper after the shank, the taper on the No. 4 is less gradual than the Mag contour (similar to the No. 3). To summarize, if you came across a McMillan that was inlet for a Remington Magnum contour, the No. 3 would probably require no additional barrel channel inletting. A No. 4 would be very close and probably require some work in certain areas, but not much, and most of that will depend on the shank length. -Dan
