Hi,
I just picked up my first Savage 99F. Had what look like weaver two piece bases on it but when i went to put some rings on it, they are not like regular Weaver bases. I've attached a couple of pics. They have a top portion cut like they would fit weaver style rings but they are narrower than normal and it you use the top cut, the recoil lugs in the rings don't go into the slots, they are too far above the base. Who knows what I have and what do you do to get rings to fit them. Thanks.

John

I don't know what bases those are, maybe late-1950s to mid-1960s vintage Lyman, but it will probably be less expensive and easier to buy a set of Weaver bases. Several of my Savage 99s have Weaver #14 (rear) and #19 (front) bases with Warne Maxima rings.

The 10-12 inches you pictured looks great. Hows about showing us the rest of the F. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate it.

Could those be bases for 3/4" rings?

Thanks for the input, guys. Jeff, I'm pretty much of the same opinion. I don't know what they are for but not really worth a lot of time. Will probably order some weaver bases and get on with it. I'll try to get some bigger pics up. Interesting story to the gun. Fellow had taken it in to Bi-Mart to have it bore sighted. Well, they did but left part of the tool in the barrel. That barrel now looks like this pretty flower with curled back petals. sick Bottom line, Bi-mart sent it to a gunsmith who put a new Douglas barrel on it and went thru the entire gun and reblued the action along with the new barrel. Nothing for a collector but really clean little shooter. I don't know much about these, just learning, but it seemed nice. Has counter and I gave $425 for it. Do you think I was in the ball park?

Here are some more pics. The buggered up recoil pad is being replaced.

Not bad for a shooter. Even buggered up 99s make for great hunting rifles.

These look like Lyman Tru-Lock bases to me. I don't have a mid-1960s vintage Lyman catalog or Shooters Bible handy, but think that the part # on the rear base might be a match.

Are bases for 3/4" and 7/8" rings the same as for 1" rings?

Don't think that they're Tru-Locks. Tru-Locks are a 36 and I forget the other. I'll have to get out to the shop and check when I get up. If they are then the Savage rings that are always on eBay will fit. Lyman made the mounting blocks and rings for Savage.

Nice wood. A fresh recoil pad and you'll have a great hunter.

Skidrow,
I would be interested if you can track that down. Would be neat to find original set that would work. These bases are numbered 180F and 180R. Noticed you are from WA, too. I grew up on Puget Sound across from Fox Island.
