I chose the Marlin over the Winchester, mainly because of the looks and stock fit. Also because of the side eject, and ease to mount a scope. But I guess I wanted to try the new 450 round also. That probably had something to do with it.
What were your reasons.
Phil

Three more reasons for preferring Marlin: Able to clean from breech and avoid ruining the crown of the rifling, many well-used 94 Winchesters have loose actions and fired cases show backed out primers while old Marlins still feel solid, and IMHO the Marlin is stronger-Winchester had to beef up the sides of their receivers for the .307 Winchester cartridge but Marlin didn't have to. curmudgeon

curmudgeon: I know your right on the strength aspect, or atleast I haven't heard any talk on a .50 Winchester yet!
Phil

Until last month I never owned a Marlin, only a pair of Winchesters. Maybe the Marlin is a better design, maybe it isn't, but they look and feel a little clumsey compared to the Winchester. I guess you'll have to put me in the Winchester camp.

Youper , we'll let you camp here but I like the Marlin better myself. I really enjoy shooting my 45-70 (1895ss). It just fits so nice and comes up quick and on target every time.......deadeye
So far, this is the oldest I've ever been. Some days you're the dog. Some days you're the hydrant.

Well,I just ordered my 4th Marlin tonight. It's a 1894 cowboy in 45 colt.It should be here in a few days.It wasn't exactly what i wanted, but marlin doesn't make a short 45LC.After i get it i will let you guys know my thoughts on it.Now i need to start saving again so i can get a stainless guidegun when they come out.~~toms

Although my deep desire is to have a stainless M92 in 45LC, I favor the Marlins with straight stocks, stainless, and longer barrels, but would love to own a stainless Guide Gun on account it don't have a longer barrel and would take one anyway. Now, if Marlin comes out with a stainless 22 inch levergun with NO ports, I'd get one. A Winchester 94 30-30 is on my list as well, but way down. i got a bunch of Marlins to buy first. ~~~Suluuq

I asked myself this same question when I went to buy my own Christmas present. I wanted a brush gun that I wasn't scared to get wet or scratched. I wanted the new stainless 336, but $500 didn't suit me.
I got the 336W. The '94's looked too nice to get wet or scratched, and I also thought the Marlin action was alot stonger. I just wished that it had a straight stock instead of a pistol grip.
Any suggestions for a receiver sight? The "batwing" rear sight truly doesn't appeal to me.

CS: I like my Ghost Ring setup from Wild West Guns. Especially with the fibreoptic front post. But I'm not sure if you setup is the same as my 1895M.
Phil

HI cs,I just got a Lyman reciever sight last week.Cost about 48.It looks well made and comes with two screw in apertures. For a poor mans "ghost ring" sight just take the aperture out.I know williams makes a reciever
sight but i haven't tried it yet.I know what you mean by that ugly rear batwing sight.~~tom

I think i'll mount the lyman reciever sight on my new cowboy 45.I'll check this coming week for a tang sight.Marlins (newer ones)are already drilled and tapped for the reciever sight.Marlin relocated the serial number on the cowboy models so you can install a tang sight and not cover up the serial number.~~~~~~~~tom

HEY Suluuq,I had a win 94 rifle once.I traded it and $50 for my old 336SC 30-30.I think i got the better deal on that trade.I see lots of 30-30's selling for 100-200 on auctionarms web site.(both win and marlin)I geuss the market is so flooded with 30-30's it just keeps the price down.~~~~~~~tom

I have a Win 94 in 22lr and just picked up a Win 94 in 357 mag. No marlins, don't know why, maybe next gun.
Whatever you are willing to put up with, is exactly what you will have.
When your ship comes in. ... make sure you are willing to unload it.
PAYPAL, sucks and I will never use them again. I recommend you do the same.

I have two Marlins: a 336 in 30-30 and a 1895SS 45-70. CS, the 45-70 has an Ashley Outdoors sight on it that is fantastic. You can really hunt later with it than with the standard batwing. -kgonzo
