I hope I can contribute some to the goings on here, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I am by no means an authority (see Joe & couple others for that) but have had somewhere around 50 or so 99s over the years of which 95% would have been 1899s.
I have or had couple oddities over the years, here's one, (no pics) that I had but traded a couple years ago in a moment of stupidity <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />. It was a typical 1899 A in 303 made 1904, completely original except the rear sight dovetall was milled into a carbine position & it had a carbine rear sight on it. Barrel length 26" & markings were all consistant with what should have been according to Murray's book <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> Another one I should have kept <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Murray is a good place to start but by no means are him nor I an authority. I've seen more variations and things that just make you wanna give up on everything you've ever learned about these rifles cause something new pops up around here everyday! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Just when you think you've got it, you're dumb founded again! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

We are always interested in the odd, special order, guns that turn up. What was the front sight? Was there any other specials on the rifle?

Absolutly reg 1899 rifle, no extras, just had the dovetail cut in the carbine position!
