Why the 416 for the little dog deer? Why not? Dead is dead.

I have killed deer with my .416 Rigby and .416 Taylor. Both work well but the bullets are a little tough for deer. The deer in this picture with the big hole visible was shot with the Rigby. It tunred a back flip on impact then ran about 40 yards. This deer was shot with the Taylor using a 400gr partition. There was blood 20' on both sides of the deer.

Well, we now know the bullets won't bounce off like they do from the puny 30/06's and 270's the wimps all use....

Remember what Elmer Kieth said "Always use enough gun".
Actually it was Robert Ruark although Elmer would agree.

A 223AI would take care of all the pesky running after the shot.

Always a good idea to practice with and gain field experience with your firearms. You just cant buy enough Buffalo to really become comfortable with a DGR.
I don't need a Ballistic Tip for my 416 Rigby, but I am looking for Moly VLD's for it - LOL.

Well, as long as you don't hit bone the tougher rounds like the .416 tend to tear up the deer very little compared to the smaller rounds. And if you hit bone, say in the shoulder, at least you will still kill it unlike the smaller rounds.
The one thing I look forward to with technology is to travel back in time to hunt mastodons!

I would rather use one on deer, than just have an expensive paper punch! whelennut
I like to do my hunting BEFORE I pull the trigger! There is only one kind of dead, but there are many different kinds of wounded.

It's OK but you need a .222 for backup, just in case!

...I have used my 416 Rigby on stuff as small as 8oz Beldens ground squirrels. Same bullet, too. They work pretty well..... ... The squirrels die of fright, if you miss?

Jimmy - just came across your post as I like the old time safari rounds. Questions: what did your deer weigh? I'm just guessing maybe 100 pounds or less? Did you use a solid or soft point? If dear old "uncle Elmer" (RIP) had read your post he'd have replied "not enough gun" to which Jack O'Connor (RIP) would have replied..."Elmer what do you want him to use...a 106mm recoiless?" Honestly, have used my .458 Winchester on south Florida swamp bunnies...don't laugh yet un-sized .45 Colt projectiles move so slowly it's like chucking wheel weights at them. A fun experience...almost as if I'd used a middle ages catapult.

Amazing you even hit the deer without a McMillan, Swarovski, fluted, 4000 fps something or rather.
