I am considering buying an A7. I realize they come with rings, are they good quality? Gun shop guy said he would shy away from them and go with steel mounts from Leupold. Any reason not to use rings supplied by Sako?

I removed the Weaver style bases that come with the A7 and screwed on a set of Talley LW's.
Of course a guy could use the supplied bases(which I imagine are just fine) and a set of steel Leupold PRW style rings and call it good.

Here's a 300WSM A7 with low Talley LW's and a 2-7x33LR Leupold.
In the pic it looks like the power ring on the scope is hitting the base of the ringmount but there is actually about an 1/8" clearance.

Sammers,

Do you know if you can remove the Weaver bases that come on the Tikka in the same way?>

Greg, I'm not sure bud.
I think the T3 has a grooved receiver but can't remember.

And here's a little better pic of the rear ring clearance. It's close but just enough room.

Sam,

Does that magazine get in the way or your center of balance when you are carrying the rifle? A friend of mine had an old model 788 with a magazine and it was a nice rilfe but the magazine was dead center of balance and really made it awkward carrying the rifle.

To be honest I bought the rifle right when hunting season started and didn't shoot it enough to 'trust' it until the end of season. I did carry it about 10 hours one day(in my hand) and a couple hours the following day and it was great.
Given it has a single stack mag it is a fairly 'slim' rifle and very easy to hold onto. Right above the mag, the stock sorta swoops in and makes a good place to keep ahold of the rifle. It's actually a very nice rifle to carry.

Thanks man...

Was holding a T3 Lite last night and man does it feel great.

It has Weaver bases but also is tapped for mounts/rings. I forgot to even notice if the Weaver base was removable...

I bet the T3 Lite is pretty light....(grin)

The A7's are actually pretty light as well, and I friggin' love how smooth cartridges feed outta that mag.

The ONLY thing that made me ponder is the unbelievably cheap feeling magazine. I'll take you and the boys' word that it is a non-issue. Right?

About 95% positive the GF is getting a T3 Stainless Lite in .243 very shortly.

I think the mags are fine as long you don't pop rounds straight down in them.

Given the open loading 'port' on the A7 it is possible to stuff cartridges into the mag(while it's in the rifle). I did it a couple times until things went to hell.
Took a little superglue and she's good to go! Nothing broke, the feed rails just popped out of place but my fancy glue job appears to prevent the issue.

Thanks Sam.

I was at at gun shop last week and fondled an A7, Tika, and X-bolt. I actually liked all of them and the Tika felt the best to me but for just a few dollars more I can have an A7 that will probably bring me more resale in the long run. That X-bolt was nice too, but I couldn't see paying an extra $200-300 for it.

They really dropped the price(internet price) on A7's. I think stainless models are listed at $600-700?

Yes, and that is a good price for a rifle guaranteed to shoot a five shot inch group. I've got a .264 and could use a 7mm-08 for deer but maybe I should bump that up to .308 or 300wsm and have a nice light elk rifle as well.

Mine was pretty easy to find a load or two that shoot pretty good. Nice action, trigger and barrel.

I have an A7 in 7mm-08 that I got for a loaner/girlfriend rifle. I used Talley light weights and the rifle has been great.

Krak, what's your take on the A7 mag?

Am I the only one dumb enough to break one?

Spot,it shoots 175 and 180 Noslers like there's no tomorrow. A 308 would be more fun to shoot than a WSM but the WSM is still fun.

I wish my 85's would take Talley's like that, I think it's a much better mounting system than the opti's.

Me too, that's why I thought the A7 was such a good choice for the Sako WSM action in a lightweight rifle. I almost saved a little more and bought a Montana but am happy as is.
