How many of you have used a .270 wsm on elk? How was the performance and what bullet worked well, or not so well, for you?

not to poach your thread, but I was going to ask if anyone had exp with the 135 vld at closeish range.
I would not buy something that runs on any kind of primer given the possibility of primer shortages and even regulations. In fact, why not buy a flintlock? Really. Rocks aren't going away anytime soon.

I took a big bull at something pushing 400 yards with a .270 WSM a couple years ago, using 130 TSXs. Worked fine. Still prefer my .264 also.

Not to hijack, but what if anything is available over the counter in a 264mag? As to 270WSM, I shot this years cow with the lowly .270Win and a 130gr. Partition at 156 yards. Fell at the shot and slid down hill in the snow. No bullet recovery as it wen behind the shoulders and out the other side. 270WSM will be a great cartridge for you.

Whoop,
The only factory loadings that are available in .264 are the Remington with 140 grain Core-lokt and the Winchester 140 grain wtih the Power Points. I much prefer the Core-lokts in factory ammo but if reloading, the Speer 140 grainers are awesome on deer.
I am not opposed to using my .264 or a .270 on elk, just new to western hunting and don't want to screw it up.

Whoop,
By the way, you and I traded guns sometimes back. I bought your 30-06 Kimber and they you bought it back from me. I was Slidellkid but I had so many problems with my account that I had to start a new one. Rick Bin is trying to fix it for me and merge the two accounts.

Over the past couple of seasons have taken a bull and two cows with 140 Accubonds. They worked fine and I wouldn't hesitate to use them again. I've also killed a few elk, and one moose, with the 270 Win., shooting 150 Partitions and would probably pick that bullet over the Accubond.

The only bull elk I ever lost was to using the .270 caliber years ago, when I was a very young lad and didn't know squat about ballistics, bullets or caliber of various rifles. I hit a nice bull twice with a 130 grain plain jane bullet in the front shoulder.
The animal then went over the top of the mountain and two brothers finised it off with their .300 Win mag and .338 Win mag. Now the .270 caliber, including the WSM version will do just fine with a premium bullet in the 150 or better yet the 160 grain Nosler partition bullet.

plumbgod,
I am originally from S.C. but I live in Louisiana now. I'll trade locations with you for a couple of years and you can catch all the redfish and speckled trout that you like and kill all the ducks you want and I'll get some elk and mule deer under my belt...sound like a deal?

Used 130g NP's from a .270Win on a few elk, they worked just fine. I would imagine the same pill pushed even faster from a WSM would work just fine too. Just gotta know its and your limits.

OMG, it took a 300 AND 338 Win Mag to kill a wounded Elk??? I have had the lucky opportunity to shoot at one Bull Elk, about 195 yards quartering away and he went down on the spot after a 130gr TSX went in behind the onside rib and across to the offside hide after plowing through the shoulder.

Shot a 340 type bull in area 2 here in Colo using my Kimber 8400 270 WSM and 130 gr Triple Shocks, quartering toward me at 200 yds. No problem, knocked him right on his ass. Also used it on several mule deer. Usually 1 shot kills. I've also shot several bulls with a 270. You just need to use a good bullet and put it where it is suppossed to go.

My load, my partner doing the shooting took a bull with the 130 grain Hornady Interbond out of a 270 WSM. Could not ask for better performance.

A 270WSM will probably bounce off.......a 270W on the other hand.....is just right for elk...... Casey

I bought a 270WSM when they first came out. That first year I shot two elk with 150g Winchester Factory ammo, Was no choice, no reloading data was available at the time. Over the years I have killed 5 or 6 more elk using the Barnes 140 TSX. A Good example was a spike bull I shot at 204 yards. He was facing me and the bullet entered the base of the neck, broke a vertabrae, passed thru a rib and bounced of the inner side of the shouderbade, passed down the rib cage breaking ribs and exited just in front of the tail. Complete end to end penetration.
