made it out tonight for the first time in a couple years with a buddy for doggies. first set was at 11pm and within 5 minutes we had two dogs come it. I hit one at about 70 yards with the 10ga. we trailed it about 800 yards and left the track for tommorow. Not sure if it was a fatal hit. BB lead shot. My pattern in the snow was about 4-5' wide. maybe about 2-3 tablespoons of blood total in all that distance, but he did bed down a couple times and he also fell over a couple times while running. he also rolled at the shot. I was so blinded by the muzzle blast I thought was laying there dead, but he had gotten up and took off. Really exciting anyway. I will see if he is dead tommorow. We left the track at the edge of a small swamp we know they bed in, so hopefully he's laid up in there for the night. It was only 8 when we headed home, so hopefully that helps to kill him.

After the follow up today. He lives to bark another day. I got on his track and he circled us in the dark last night then headed off the property. I think he has a sore foot and that is about it.

70 yards is a stretch for a shotgun, even the 10 gauge. What kind of patterns are you getting at that distance?

If you're tempted to shoot that far, use 4buck. There isnt much energy left in BB at that distance.

well, it was 70 max. could have been 50-55. hard to tell in the dark. pattern was about 4-5 wide at the distance. I just hit him too far back. I think I only got a couple pellets into him. I agree, I would prefer #4 or #1 or even 00 buck, but Mi doesnt allow it after dark. I can use it daytime, but havent tried calling during daylight yet. Not sure I could make that work around here. For distance, many of the 12 gauge loads are actually a LOt faster, just not as many pellets. But when it's dark out, it's easier to attempt to aim looking down the double barrel since I cant see the sights anyway, at least I have the wide sight plane.
How long do you think until I could hunt that area again. We called in two but heard at least half dozen more in two different directions. We figured we heard close to 10 dogs last night.

What did you use for sounds? If you only used prey distress you could go back in there and use coyote vocalization.....especially now that the breeding season is underway...

As stated use some coyote vocalizations late season and you will probably have some success in recently called areas. Around here it seems that dog calling has become very popular and there are not that many uneducated ones around anymore. Most guys are still using distress this time of year and it help to break things up a little.

what vocalizations do you use? I have been looking at the foxpro calls and thining of getting one. Would need to know what sounds to get I guess. I think my buddies call has some dog sounds too. anything in particular?
