OK, I am just asking, so don't crucify me. I have NOT done this, although the thought has crossed my mind.
I have heard that coyotes love cats, so has anyone gone down to the local pound/ animal shelter and brought home a cat, then used it as a decoy? I would think it would work like a charm, and if the yote beat you to the punch, no big deal, just a cat that was gonna get uthenized in 2 weeks anyway.

Why not just get a Montana Coyote decoy that you don't need to feed? You'll not anger the radical pet people and anti-hunters either. Lightweight and folds up into a small package. About $50 if you shop around. http://www.montanadecoy.com/In my limited use so far, coyote really focuses on the decoy.

Why waste a good cat? Just use your little doggie and try not to miss the 'yote.

Will a dog work as a decoy?
I'm not talking of the trained dogs that run out to lure the coyotes back toward the gunner (though that would be neat). I'm really thinking of just tying my dog on a line to a fence post, then start calling nearby.
Would the staked out dog attract coyotes? Any pitfalls in the practice? My dog loves being out with me, and this would give us one more chance to do something together.

tie your dog up and he'll get nailed...
i know a guy who called a stand and was through and on his way to get his tied out dog... had to cross a gully and was out of sight for what he swore was less than 20 seconds... the dog lived, but was sure tore up....

Hmm...I'd be sure to keep her in sight, with the gun loaded...this sounds like it could be fun, especially if she was tied right close to me.

Good grief. Buy the damn decoy and leave the house pets in the house.

I can't believe some of you guys are considering taking your house pets for a decoy. You fellas must be single, if I even thought about that for a second my wife would kill me. Get a decoy.

I've got a life size coyote decoy (Flambeau I think) that goes on a stake. I have only used it on three stands. I killed a coyote that ran up and stood staring at the decoy set off 25 yards from me, instead of looking at me with a hand call. 30 yard shot.
I don't call coyotes much any more and my kids got me the decoy as a half way joke at Christmas. I also have the Minaska Sidewinder decoy that I use for cats. On a stand intended for a bobcat a coyote came in and stared at the moving topper so long that I finally decided to shoot him. Big old male, very heavy mature old dog. About a 20 yard shot.
IMO decoys help on coyotes. Unless it was a trained decoy dog, I think a live animal would be a LOT more trouble than a plastic decoy.

Yes i can hear my wife now if i start out with one of her cats. As far as my dogs it would be hard to kill a yote with them all sitting in my lap. Buy the Decoy and leave the pets on the couch.
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

And we hunters wonder why so many people hate us. How about tying a piece of beef liver on your ba??s and using it as bait?

This ain't no house dog! She goes hunting with me all the time, as do most of the dogs around these parts that I know of. If coyotes were going to take her down, they'd have done it long ago, as she is outside all the time anyway.
This would be one more chance for her to get out hunting with me. Have you guys lived around farm dogs much in your lives?

Even farm dogs get et, leave the pets at home.
But this odes bring up a good story.
We had a big hunt and one of the guys brought a mounted coyote for a decoy. He left it in his room one day and the maid about had a heart attack when she opened the door. She was mad at us all week.

I've never heard of or seen a farm dog get eaten, or even attacked, around here. There are a lot of farms with dogs around here, and a lot of coyotes too. The dogs are supposed to keep the coyotes away from the homes/barns, and seem to do a pretty good job of it.

In the winter there would be little chance of getting your dog tore up by coyotes...from about mid April through out the summer is another story. When coyotes are denning and or raising pups they are very protective and very aggressive towards dogs....all dogs regardless of size. Two or three adult coyotes can kick the bejeezes out any dog. I hunt with a large Airedale Terrier during denning season and on through the summer months. He's a big strong and tough dog but no match for a pair of "wet" coyotes. He is well trained to go out tussle a bit and then make his way back to me asap with both coyotes in close tow. He is six years old now and in his prime coyote hunting years but every time he goes out there is always a chance of him not returning.
Luck....is the residue of design...

Sounds fun--when he comes back toward you, what't it like? full-speed ahead or luring them along? How do the coyotes act--charging in or just loping along? How do you gun them down if they are tusseling with your dog?

They dont get far from the dog at all as they are trying to get their licks in, biting and nipping. A guy has to wait until the dog is clear before you shoot. I have a shotgun and a rifle along.
