Picked up a Savage 99 30-30 from my grandfather in Law's farm. It's been hanging in a shop by the barn for most of it's life. FUnctions okay mechanically, but I'm going to do a Birchwood Casey Plumb Brown finish on it...But I'm looking for a replacement butt stock. Anybody know where I coudl get a used one for a reasonable price? I'm not planning on investing much $$ in the rifle as I will be eventually returning it to one of the grandkids when he gets his firearms license, but I'd like to spruce it up a bit, considering it's been in the family since it's manufacture around 1929....

If it's the original butt plate and the wood isn't busted up under the athletic tape, why not drive a hardwood dowel with some wood glue through the "Sling Hole ;)" Gotta love poly twine, then carefully sand flush with the stock on both sides then refinish to your hearts desire.

Shoudl have mentioned- It's got lots of cracks under the tape, and it's split near the tang.

Since you're north of the border, I don't have too many suggestions. Any of the aftermarket stocks will need significant fitting and finishing, don't know if you want to go that route. 20+ hours of work is a number I remember being thrown about. Mad Dog might be able to point you to somebody who can duplicate a stock for a couple of hundred bucks?

If I knew of a stock I would have told Gatehouse about it a couple weeks ago.

I think Norm knows a guy that duplicates stocks in Alberta, probably half the price thats quoted.

I would make every effort to repair the stock. As mentioned above, you would be surprised what can be done. As far as re-bluing, it's your gun to do with as you please. If it were mine and I bought it at a yard sale for $50, re-bluing would definitely be in it's future. If it had been in my family for 80 years I would think twice about it. If a gun like that could only talk, the stories it would tell. Re-bluing it would give it a case of laryngitis.

This rifle isn't going to be a wall hanger...Hence the desire to re finish it. smile

This rifle does have some good stories attached to it, like the time Grandad shot a deer with it, and made the deer into a "backpack" and was carrying it down off the mountain. He sat down on a stump for a rest and a guy that lived up the valley shot the deer and hit Granddad in the neck! Lucky it was a fairly minor wound...I can only imagine what would have happened if the other guy had been using a 300 magnum and TSX bullets!

Would agree with gnoahhh. That there is family history patina, if not down right Depression era chic. If it were mine, I would remove the tape and epoxy the the splits in the butt stock, perhaps steam out some of the pressure dings in the wood parts. Keep the sling hole but lose the bailing twine (albeit a clever and economical sling). Hand rub with 600 wet/dry with boiled linseed oil. Clean the metal parts of rust with Kroil (or kerosene) soaked copper scour pad. Call it good after that.

Cost? Plenty of hours of entertainment and around 10-15 bucks.

Scary story there, Gatehouse, but I did laugh out loud at the "deer backpack". That's funny!
