I've got the itch for a .22-250. Haven't done any research yet, thought I start with my fellow campfire attandees.

Any recommendations on what's out there?

Criteria:

Use: Hunting coyotes and long distance plinking/practice.

Cost: I subscribe to you get what you pay for, but I'm not inclined to go the custom route either. So who is making a good rifle in this caliber that won't break the bank?

Appreciate the forthcoming advice!

For a walking varmint rig I dont think you can do much better than the Rem LV SF.

For the not walking around so much side I would do the VSSF

If you do Remington factory guns.

I'll have to second Ingwe on the predator. I wish I never sold mine. Although, I just picked up a rem 700 VTR yesterday and will be giving her a go in two weeks while I'm at camp.

I certainly like the Ruger, and Remington has a great action even if not the best out of box accuracy. But maybe you would get lucky there. However I would suggest a Tikka T3 may be one of the better values right now, and the chances of getting one that won't shoot great right out of the box is slim.

Lots of folks are hot on the Savage rifles, but for too many years they were just a rusty piece of pipe screwed to a 2x4 for me to warm up to them yet.

Another choice might be a Howa. I won one in a drawing, and it's not very pretty sitting there in the black tupperware stock, but it does shoot good. It's going to be my stand in for 22-250, so I can send my Win 70 off to become a ....well I don't know what it is going to become yet.

I have a stevens that I camoed myself that has less than 50 rounds fired and has a trigger job done on it. It breaks at three pounds. It puts tiny little groups in paper at 100 yards. I'd let that go for $250 with the old but good Tasco 4-16 made in Japan not the china garbage.

While a little on the heavy side, I really like my Kimber 84M Varmint. It's mostly just used for shooting woodchucks so the weight doesn't come into play that much.

You can stretch them out a little if you get the itch....and the wind isn't blowing too bad.

Unless I move, I woun't be doing that much walking. I'm hunting farms in the southern most part of VA and the northern most part of NC (envious of you guy's in the mid-west!)

Mostly yote's and foxes. Some nutria but not many groundhogs for some reason.

Pa MT Man...you have my attention on the Stevens. Don't know much about them, but might be an inexpensive way to get into varmint hunting before making a big jump$$...I'll PM you.

I'm a Remmy kinda guy, but I bought Savage Predator last year and I was morte than impressed with accuracy. Not too heavy and easy on the eyes. I think I gave $550 or something close.

Find one with a 1-8" or 1-9" twist barrel. Opens up lots of options in the heavier bullets, making the 22-250 a much more viable whitetail rifle, as well as making it an even better coyote rifle, IMHO, with the heavier bullets like the 75gr. Amax.

1-14" They don't offer one in a 1-8 like they do the .223. Bummer..

tikka, and tikka again, don't rule out a 243, it will shoot 55's as fast or faster than a 22-250. its more versatile.

I watched a fella at the range 2 months ago. He pulled a Rem 700 SPS Stainless out of its new box he mounted up a Leupold 4-12x40 VXII.

He got it on paper at 25yd then went to 100yd. He sat there smiling, pounding out about 8 or 10 groups that were 3/4" and less.

Then he worked on the 200yd paper for a bit. After several more 3/4" to 1" groups he took a break. We talked for a few minutes about his new toy. He said he was gonna take it home, tune the trigger, bed it, maybe float, and do a couple more things, too see if he could get it to do what a Remington 700 should do.....Bastid!

He was shooting plain old green box 55's and some pretty little BT's (maybe handloads) of some sort.

Get the 250 and run it. Lots of fun.

Dicks had some Rem 700's for $450.

Kimber 84M!

I like the 1-12" barrels Savage makes for them, so that would be my choice. I've had four Savage .22/250s and all of them shot WAY better than they should have.
I was anti-Savage for a long time, I thought they were ugly POS, but after seeing them outshoot some Winchesters I had, I changed my tune, as the Winchesters weren't slouches. Savage makes enough variations to find something not too heavy and not too light........
