He was coming late to a stand intended for lynx and my partner and I didn't see him till we started walking away. I saw his stub tail as he turned in snow at 129 yards and thought that he was a lynx for a moment. It looks like a recent injury that cut off his tail. This is the third bobtailed coyote I've seen, but what are the odds of one coming to a stand intended for stub tailed critters?

You think it is a bullet injury?

I have seen some shorter (than most)tailed coyotes, but never that short. Sure looks like it could be a bullet.

You think it is a bullet injury?
stumpy It is hard to know but a bullet is one of the likely possibilities. He was WAY out in wilderness, 60 miles out on a paved road to nowhere and then 45 miles off that on an unplowed side logging road. No farms or even highway speed vehicles near enough to factor, and hardly any snow machine tracks within miles. That leaves a bite by another animal (most likley I'd guess), or a weird encounter with a trap, though not many folks trap with fur prices so low, or a bullet. There are quite a few wolves in the area, plus cougars and lynx plus other coyotes. Wolves will kill coyotes I've heard and he may have lost his tail to a near miss. No answer, just speculations.

It's mating season, and I suspect that another coyote bit off the tail.

The Mayans had it right. If youre going to predict the future, its best to aim far beyond your life expectancy, lest you wind up red-faced in a bunker overstocked with Spam and ammo.

Okanagan ,
If you're from that region in washington there are wolves there -just saying . There's a website coyotecottage -i emailed a lady that lives there about a picture she took of a wolf -they're there . Coycat or bobyote though i'm sure .

Very likely could have been from a snare. Just an idea. Interesting though.
