I read a post recently where someone mentioned that if you couldn't afford a Remington Ti Alaskan that you could buy a Tika stainless and it would shoot right out of the box. There was a respsonse that claimed that he was comparing apples and oranges and there was no comparison. So, my question is, knowing I will get outstanding accuracy out of a stainless Tika, why do I need an Alaskan, what will an Alaskan do that a Tikka won't especially considring the Alaskan may or may not shoot well?

Tikka all the way. You don't need or want any Remington if you can get a Tikka.

Well, I have been a Remington man all my life, but I guess I just don't understand what can be accomplised with a $1800 Alaskan versus a $500 Stainless Tikka.

Am I missing something here? You're comparing one of Remington's most expensive hunting rifle to a $500 Tikka, what is your point?

You don't need an Alaskan, heck if accuracy is your only issue you could probably match both with $300 Savage Stevens 200.

Well, I guees its Ok we all have our own opinions on things. IMHO the Alaskan Ti is overpriced, maybe weighs more than it should/could and isn't the 1st Gen Ti.

But, they are nice rifles if you like Remingtons, and if you come across a good one well they are real shooters also. I have one in 25-06, except for the trigger being adjusted I've not had to do anything else to it. With factory TSX 100 grain ammo it will shoot well under MOA - when I pay attention to what I'm doing. And you can find them for less than $1700 if you look around.
I wish I had one in 7mm-08, I could be happy with the pair.

My tikka's have all ben sub MOA right out of the box with factory ammo. With my handloads they all do sub 1/2 MOA. Thats right I said 3 shots under 1/2" at 100 yards!

stmcelroy,

It wasn't my point. In another thread regarding the Alaskan someone suggested that the purchaser just buy a Tikka and be done with it. The comment came back that the Tikka was not even in the ballpark with the Alaskan. My question is there some benefit I'd see from purchasing an Alaskan over a $500 Tikka?

Swampfoot, you are probably right there. Other than just wanting to have one, is there something in the build of an Alaskan that would make it a better mountain rifle for me?

I do not think there is any inherent greatness of the A. Ti, over the Tikka. If you like the looks of a Tikka buy one, I heard they are real shooters, its what ever draws your eye, all things equal in the accuracy dept. Thats why they make different guns.

if you drop it off a cliff you have the luxury of 2 million model 700 replacement parts... not so much with the tikka

I think we are missing the point of the price difference here... Tikka accomplishes a light weight through replacing steel parts with plastic, and making a slim receiver, the Remington Ti does it by replacing the steel receiver with titanium, and the stock is graphite and Aramid (I think). So Tikka accomplishes a light weight by cheap parts, Remington with expensive parts.

I think a Tikka is a way smarter way to get a light rifle than an Alaskan. You can buy three Tikkas for the price of the AL. The Rem 700 was my first hunting rifle, I am sure that I have owned at least 40 of them, and had at least one continuously for the past 35 years. Never had one that was as easy to get dialed in as the Tikka I bought couple years ago.

Yeah, I wasn't taking sides on Remington vs. Tikka, just splainin what hadn't been mentioned regarding why the price difference. Never owned a Tikka. I started writing that thinking the Remington weighed considerably less, which I guess it does not.

Had a LH T3, liked it, hated the chambering (.270WSM), sold it.

Got an older, used LH Remington 700KS for close to T3 price and I got an all metal and Kevlar mountain rifle in .270Win with a 24"(required for the .270Win IMO) slim barrel and a high quality Brown Precision stock.

I'll be keeping the KS.

There are alot of very nice rifles out there on the used rack, especially for you bastid RHers!

Check this months Eastman's. They have a mountain rifle reveiw,The Rem Ti,and the Tika are in the line up also Savage's model 16.
Also Remington has discontinued the 700 TI so the price is sure to rise for what remaining calibers are left on the market.

I've had many Remington and about 3 Tikkas. Tikkas just shoot and the triggers are great. I also like the integral mounts.
