What is the proper way to measure a rifles' LOP? Thanks

I always run a tape from the trigger face back to the rear edge of the recoil pad's middle.
Now with even more aplomb

Almost exact... The line should be parallel to the bore, not to the middle of the pad. Pitch may then affect it more than it should.

Although "parallel to the bore maybe correct,if the average pitch angle is out 80 degrees and you adjust to make the line paralell to the bore,you might move 3" from the center of the pad.That is 10 degree off vertical. At .017 inch per degree, you are talking about .050 inch differnce.I doubt anyone can tell the differnce if thier stock is .050 longer or shorter than it suppose to be.Might be wrong here

I agree with your point entirely, but when you take the variabilty in drop at comb and heel, pitch, pad length, and probably something else I forgot it adds up to enough to make measurement to the nearest 1/8" less then precise... and everyone would measure it differently...
Is it really meaningful? Probably not.
