I'm looking at this rifle and have a few questions I hope you can answer...

What's the purpose of the take down model?

What's the point of the pistol grip?

What scope would you put on one for deer/elk in Colorado?

Thanks...

Be careful mounting a scope. Metal on top of the receiver is a bit on the thin side.

What's the purpose of the take down model? Ease of packing/transporting.

What's the point of the pistol grip? So that have an option.

What scope would you put on one for deer/elk in Colorado? Whatever gets the bullet from the muzzle to the desired target.

Thanks...

Haven't had any experience with the takedown model.

I have an older Model 81 (Steel Reciever) in .308 that I really like.

It has the straight stock, which I prefer.

As far as scope mounting, I have a one piece mount with integral rings.

The scope I would chose would depend on the caliber, but nothing larger than a 3 x 9 x 40 for this type of rifle.

Best,

JM

Thanks JackA$$, but I'm the only one in my family who hunts so I have to rely on people with knowledge to inform me. Thanks for adding exactly NOTHING to this thread.

I'm probably going to go with a 30-06 or a .300 Win Mag. So I think a 3-9x40 would probably be good.

So the straight stock/pistol grip a preference rather than function thing?

Thanks for your help

I like the feel vs. the pistol grip. You may like the pistol grip stock better, the best thing to do is handle both and see.

If you plan on shooting it alot, some say the straight grip tends not to bust the knuckles as much if you are shooting heavy loads, I don't know if I buy that or not.

Best,

JM.

I prefer the pistol grip model for comfort. Mine in 358 win is really comfortable and easy to shoot.

The take down allows you to clean the barrell from the right end, and it packs better

I prefer the straight grip, but to each his own.

I found the vx--III 2.5x8x36 to be a great match

Just my .02 but the short action models fit me much better.

I think were it me, I would make mine max out at 30-06 or less. 300 Mag could push back more than you might like. Pistol grip stocks may mitigate recoil a bit better.

Optics are a personal thing but a 2.5-8x36 in a vx-III seems plenty good to me.

If I were you I would go and handle both the long and short action. The difference is considerable. The long action is clumsy and balances weird. In the sort action you can get the 300 WSM.........better than the 30.-6 almost the 300 Win mag. I would also go with the pistol grip.............again handle them both more than once.

As far as scopes I like low power............whether it be fixed or variable. The Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36 fits this bill!!!

I got the 300 WSM in the stainless laminated takedown model and like it...Put the Zeiss 2.5 - 8 on it. Mine came from the factory with a horrible trigger pull ( have read here this is quite common), but there is a guy named Neal Jones in Pennsylvania who does a great trigger job on them for a reasonable price.

I have a .308 with pistol grip. I prefer the grip because I feel like I have better control of recoiling rifle. Neil Jones ,a PA based gunsmith, did a terrific trigger job for my BLR. I have a 4x on it (Virginia deer) and it will happily put factory fodder into a 100yd. inch or less. In a way, in terms of lock up at least, the BLR is a carbine length bolt action operated by lever. It deserves and benefits mightly from a decent trigger, 1"moa and better should come as no suprise.

It takes 150-250 shots to get the BLR to break in and really start smoothing out.
