It kills deer well. All I've shot is the factory 200 grain load that I purchased here and there (mainly HERE) in partial boxes or from folks who sold their .358...never purchased a box of .358's in a store...never seen it but I don't look for it either. Cloverleafs the factory ammo so I won't reload for it until the the last is gone... I burn through a lot of ammo in other rifles, but I just like to kill stuff with this one Stainless Model 7, 21 inch Douglas #3, 1/12 twist, McMillan Mt Rifle stock w/Edge tech, Marine Tex bedded, Tally LW's, FXII 4x33, 6.5 lbs scoped.

That right there is a killing machine!
Mine is a stainless M7, 20" Pac-Nor barrel, laminate stock with the butt hollowed, and a Zeiss 1.8-5.5x38mm in Talley's.
First deer I killed with a .358 was with those factory 200's. Wicked bullet. Doe at 125 yards, open sights, she went down as if swatted. Which I suppose is what happened!
The CENTER will hold.

Here's one I put together a few yrs ago.... 'Thumper' Savage 16 action w/21" Pac Nor 12 twist tube... Glass is 4200 Bushy 1-6 Firefly...... Handles all boolets from 158 gr to 250 gr Hornies.... Its still cherry....except I dumped a couple of p/dogs @ 200 yds with the 158 gr JHP load.... NICE... The only alternative I can think of is .450 Marlin. (I do have an affinity for big bores). Nice lookin' rifle.

Man, Ya'll have got me looking at Rugers now! I love the older Model 81 BLR. I actually prefer the straight stock over the pistol grip. I have hunted with one in .308 for years. This has been a very educational thread. Now I just don't know if I want the BLR or a Bolt? Thanks...

Going by your sig - line you need both. So there.
I have been ready to pull the trig on a Browning .358 BLR, albight the alu, a couple times.
Last year it was the browning reps at the IWA that scared me of.
A heck, going out now - see what the animals are doing. Maybe take one home.

Guessing it's a good round for those that can't shoot...........
Still think a 22-25 caliber is a better deer machine.

It's a pretty easy cartridge to feed and make shoot well. Fact is I've never had a 35 that didn't shoot well.

Still think a 22-25 caliber is a better deer machine. This rifle will be a dedicated Pig and Black bear gun if they ever give us a bear season in La. JM

Marc,
Talk to me about the BLR and the Hawkeye. I've been wanting a "bigger" .358 and there's a BLR in the classifieds. I'm just not sure about the strait stock. The LA Hawkeyes I've handled are HEAVY. My .35 Rem. needs a big brother.
George George I like the BLR it feels right and points well. The Hawkeye feels great to and is very accurate. If we get the camping trip in June put together I'll bring both and plenty of ammo and you can try them out for yourself.

We have the Frontier .358 with a Weaver K3 Post on top. Got 100 rounds of Remington 180s we're going to load at about 1,900 fps and kill stuff with this summer, then switch to the Speer 180 FPs a bit faster come this fall.
Whopped one big doe with it that had been hit with another caliber and was making for the brush. Had a Micro T1 on it then and after the snapshot at 90 yards it's front end collapsed and she bulldozered about 10 yards.

The other thing that a 358 is good for is to tick off the 243 fans. You show them a 358 case and tell them that is what their little cartridge will be when it grows up. Great fun at camp! Dale I fully agree! The best use for a 243 or 308 is to make it a 358 Win. I converted a Sako L579 and M70 Classic FWT, both were 243s. FWIW, the 225 NBT or NAB will fit in the M70 and Ruger short actions, but not in my Sako. Lou

Like many others have said, the .358 Win is a great cartridge. I currently have two rifles chambered for it. I have owned three different older BLR's in .358 Win and the first two had difficult extraction issues. Spent quite a bit of time and dollars trying to get them to work correctly and ended up selling them at losses. Third one was okay but eventually sold it when I finally found a .358 in a Savage 99. Same handloads work fine in the Savage but gave problems in the first two BLR's. Factory ammo also was a problem in the two with extraction issues. Try to shoot it before you buy it is my advice. Extraction issues surfaced if shot several times in succession with either factory ammo or handloads. Never have had a problem with the .308 Belgium BLR that I still have with either factory or handloads. Good luck on yours if you do the deal.

I had a older straight stock BLR in .358 shot 225gr sierra's into 3/4" groups at 100yds and felt recoil was not bad at all, made the mistake of selling it to buy a new stainless model....wrong move - like the older model much better..

Wonderful to see Ruger recognising a great cartridge in the .358 win , now all they need is a 30/40 krag in a No 1A for us nostalgia buffs. I also have 2 .358's both Pre 64 model 70 with Douglas barrels and new stocks, the 220 Speer flat point is one of the most accurate and devastating bullets to use in a .358 rifle. Flattens pigs very quickly.

I've never owned a lever gun in 358 but it's on my list. I own 3 bolt rifles right now. First build is a 700 E R Shaw 20" #3 contour. I call it my LTR. 2nd one is the Remington 600 21" barrel that floated around the fire for a while that if I remember correctly Grasshopper was the first seller. The 3rd is a custom Model 7 stainless 21" Douglas in a brown laminated stock.

Looking at picking up an older (steel reciever) Model 81 BLR in .358 Winchester.
Couple points about the BLRs. The combs are too low and the triggers are crappy. .

Highly recommend it. 200 gr. Hornady for me. I've only slayed a single bear and a couple of chunky whitetails with it but it made all of them quite sick. Skane, Tell me more about your Remmy, that's a sweet package! Love the quick release rings and backup irons, good sensible scope for the package as well. Custom barrel & stock? Or are we talking stock gun?? Nice picture and thanks for sharing!! No idea why the 257 bullets are in the foreground of this pict.
