Took the plunge on a sale item from McMillan, just interested in opinions of the stock. M7 Mag inlet in Remington Hunter in Edge. Should weigh 27 oz.

I'd think the Rem Hunter to be too beefy (varmint-ish) for my likes with a factory mag contour. Tikka Hunter / Sako Hunter would float my boat though. Maybe you have really big mitts?

Mine is not in edge but I just got one in standard fill. Mine has a #5 barrel and I think anything smaller would get lost in there. I gotta say that it might be the perfect stock for a hunting rig that is long range oriented with a #5 or heavier barrel.

For a thick tube it's a nice handle. The grip (palm swell) and cheekpiece feel really good shooting offhand or down. The flatter forend isn't to wide to be uncomfortable carrying, but still rides nice on a rest or pack.

The design doesn't carry over well to shooting with the offside/weak hand...just not made that way. The forend will carry a LOT of barrel so the mag contour may seem kinda small in it. I've not used one with Edge fill, only standard. It's a beefy stock so it will be a littler heavier than slim versions with the same fill just due to the extra material.

FWIW, McMillan told me that they have a new stock model, the McMillan Hunter, that was specifically designed to fit the Remington 7/700 actions better then the Sako or Tikka Hunter styles. I recently bought a Tikka Hunter inletted for a Remington 700 SA from the Internet Specials and I like the stock, but the BDL bottom metal is slightly recessed below the level of the stock. I called McMillan to ask about this and Colleen told me that the McMillan Hunter is their response to this known problem.

Jeff.

Is that different than their Remington Hunter? Reason I ask is the Remington Hunter is similar to the Sako Hunter, but the forend is much beefier.

Colleen told me that the McMillan Hunter has the thin forearm like the Sako/Tikka Hunter, but she didn't know when it was going to show up on their site.

If you have any questions, call McMillan and ask for Colleen.

or send a PM to Ryan aka shoottowin. He mentioned the McMillan Hunter in my conversation with him regarding the Tikka Hunter and agreed to make me one. Hopefully, it'll show up soon. wink

My Remington Hunter stock was briefly on my mag contour barrelled action before i did a rebarrel. i thought it looked goofy. i went with a fluted #5 on the rebarrel and i really like it. it is a beefy stock though. I've considered getting one in an edge - that may be a future project. WOuldn't mind dropping a few ounces off that gun

Straight from Ryan's email to me:

"Hi Jeff,

I will tell Rick Bin to add the McM Hunter to his stock options for customers to purchase. In the meantime, you can go ahead and select the Tikka 65 and place the order. We will automatically change the stock to the McM Hunter when we notice your putting a remmy into it. Weve been doing that on all orders for the past 3 months.

Does the McM Hunter look just like the Tikka 65?

Well I got it in today and before anyone complains, I will post pics when I get around to it. First off I must say the shipping carton and packaging were first rate, not just stuffed in a box with some peanuts. It was a web special and I felt like getting a deal. It weighs 26,4 oz, beautifully finished and my Rem 7 300 Saum drops right in with plenty of float (not excessive though). As Jpro said, it has a lot of forearm, especially compared to the factory plastic (which weighs in 11.5 oz heavier). But fortunately I have big Mitts. In initial shouldering, the gun feels good. I weighed the gun after installing with Burris 3x9 and Talleys, unloaded, and in comes in at 7.2#.

Overall I think it will be a nice rig. With the web special I figure I was able to shave weight at $36.95 an ounce. That will probably be the cheapest weight reduction I can muster. I have thought about sending the gun to Mr. Kampfield for a weight loss program, but that would be a lot more than $36.95 an oz.
