If you want a custom made call check out Rich Cronk's stuff. He does good work. Do a search for Cronk's Custom Calls and it should get you his website. Sceery calls are good if you're looking to buy a cheaper call. I prefer open reed calls to a closed reed simply because a closed reed call will freeze up and screw up your set.

If your looking for a custom? I would suggest a Rhino 05Flare made by Jay Nistetter of Rhino Calls.

If your looking for production calls? I would suggest Johnny Stewart AP-3 (This is a bite type call) Some folks say as beginners to go with closed reed first and work your way to open reed calls. I started in the middle with this call, and quickly picked it up. Out of all the calls I have the two I have listed are my go to calls.

With that said, most of the calls on the market will call something in.

Be safe,

My favorite is a custom call from a guy in Boise. He makes closed-reed call out of antlers. They work extremely well and are good looking to boot! One nice thing is that all the proceeds (he only makes a little over 100/yr) go to fund the youth/handicapped hunter program that he runs.

I agree with AY (ouch, that hurt!) and Rancher.

I know Rich Cronk and Jay Nistetter. Their calls are excellent and they are both pros at calling and call making.

The CritRCall Pee Wee is always in my bag as well.

I also agree about the "guy up in Boise".

Slydog, aka Rick Gipson makes some beautiful open and closed reed antler calls. He retired early and started a 501(C)3 non-profit devoted to helping kids hunt that couldn't otherwise. 100% of the proceeds from his calls go to support the Raven's Idaho Youth Hunter, Inc. program.

I have several of his calls and one of his buffalo horn howlers. They are all custom tuned and call critters.

You can e-mail him here: ravenarr1@aol.com

Here are some of his calls:

Bob- Slydog, be the man. His calls sure are beautiful and I just HAVE to have one of his howlers. Sorry for not being clearer.

Thanks for an informative post. I am discovering I like mouth calling much better than the electronic caller that's collecting dust in my garage. Of course, it weighs 10 lbs. at the beginning of the day and 100 at the end of it ...

I'm intersted in a basic list of calls. Right now I have a model that will make rabbit distress and, with an extension, a deer bleat pretty well. Is it possible to imitate bird distress and cat distress calls with a mouth call? Crows not included.
