Always wanted a pre 64 Winchester Model 70 in .270 WCF and finally picked one up today. My Dads business partner and best friend used to collect guns. Got to talking to him a few months back about how bad I want to find one and he says "I got one of those".
"Yeah, but I bet it's not a featherweight" I said.
"Oh it's a featherweight all right. I even put it in another stock so I wouldn't mess up the original anymore. It was my first deer gun. My Dad bought it for me."
I told him if he ever got rid of it, I am they guy to talk to. A few weeks went by and he told me he wanted me to find him a Gibson Les Paul for his son and he would trade it for the gun! Well, I found a nice Les Paul Standard today. Played great and sounded even better. Priced too high, but I low balled at $900 and they took it. Total score.
Went by to do the trade for the gun, and he offers to switch the Redfield scope for a 3-9 Leupold Vari-x II! Not gonna complain about that. He then tells me it's his only .270 so I might as well take all his factory ammo. 6 boxes of Winchester PP and a box of Corelokts.
He was happy to make the trade and told me he would have never let this go to anyone but me. I made sure and thanked him a bunch and told him how much it meant. He's not the type of guy to sit around and talk about feelings and sentiments so I shook his hand and told him thanks one last time and got out of there.
Got the scope and stock changed out and she's back to all her Pre '64 glory. Not a safe queen by a long shot, but thats not what I wanted. I wanted a gun with history and stories. This ones got it in spades.

It just doesn't get any better than a nice Pre-64 fwt 70! Congrats! Did anyone mention pics...??

God Bless America. Congrats on your new rifle. I have a pre-64 Featherweight 30-06, 375 H&H and my Dad's old .264 Win. Mag. These rifles will be used by my children's children. I am always on the look out for a good pre-64. Have fun with that gun!

That's a nice story as well as a very good quality rifle, look after it , it won't be your last Pre'64 model 70.Here in Australia I have found about 40 over the years and still have 13 of them , including the first 375 HH to be imported here in 1938.Also probably the first .22 Hornet s/no 2682 , this particular hornet was found behind a door in NSW and I bought it for $300 , Good things do happen don't they!!!!! All the best with yours , regards Ian

Still buying a rifle here and there but always seems the "go to" gun is my pre '64 fwt. .308. Took my gramps .300 H&H standard version to Africa last June. In the family we also have .30-06 and .22 hornet. I have a hard time parting with any gun but those are on the never list. Enjoy it and don't pass up any others you can reasonably acquire.
