Man...you ain't wearing pants,if you don't go with a .585 Nyati

Really,I have some 600 grain loads for the .458Lott,they are about all you can stand!

Worse than recoil is packing a 13 or 14 pound 500 all day in the African heat..not for me...

A lot of folks that love the really big bores have not hunted with them and have no clue, they are closet toys with bragging rights for the most part...

However there are some exceptionally hardy souls with small tiny brains and massive muscle structure that enjoy hunting with such calibers as the 600 and 700 N.E. etc. and I tip my hat to them with only a tad of scorn!!! smile smile

Just some added humor, maybe! smile

Concerning the 500s on a bolt rifle my most successful was a standard custom job on a Brno 602. I had it done in a 510 Wells. Firstly it was a reasonably straight forward job. Secondly using 460 Weathbery brass it was one pass through the die.
I ran it in on a diet of cast gas check 590gr. The local pig population were the test subjects. No need to discuss the performance of loads around 1900fps! 570gr Woodleigh were LIVLEY off the bench sighting in. A VXII 1-4x survived and is still delivering the goods after 14 years.Age demanded that I move down to a 458Win Mag and a 375H&H. The VXII probably likes the downsize too.

458 lott gets my vote. I've got multiple big bores and that one has a special place in my heart. Recoil is pretty stout but with practice its very managable. The 458 lott will anchor anything on gods green earth!

I have a 458 Lott and a 450 Dakota. My preference is the Dakota. It's on a ZKK602 action and weighs 8.5# with the scope. I only use the scope to develop loads. The recoil is very easy with 4064 and a 470gr DGS-2340fps. It rolls me some but much more pleasant to shoot than the Lott at equal velocity. It is an extremely accurate rifle-one hole at 50yds.
I have also shot a 450 Rigby some in a Granite Arms Mauser action. Very nice cartridge.
I am past dangerous game hunting in Africa at my age but I enjoy Florida pig hunting with the Dakota.

I know thats true... and I not talking about you personally but they do recoil when you practice...

and if it is too painful to practice or you have to change your load significantly to tolerate the recoil you can start off with a real disadvantage (IMO).

Im guessen the animal will not be more impressed if they were killed with one shot with a 375 or a 458.

All that said I still want a 458 Lott.

Nothing like hitting the bench with a big bore....Yeah Right!
I seldom ever put my big bore rifles on a bench, only to work up a new load perhaps. I do however try to avoid such play with my toys.

I have one that is being shippped off to Mag NA Port this week. A .470-Capstick I have been working on this rifle (model 70 Winchester) for sometime now and it will be my last big bore unless I hit the lottery big. I gave up the idea of shooting 600 grain bullets with this big bore, you just don't need them.

I have no problem shooting the .458 Win mag or even the .458-Lott with regular loads, add extra powder and it will bite you twice. I have never shot a .505 Gibbs but then again I have never shot a 700 Nitro Express either and will skip that shooting session if it ever comes about gentlemen.

The 505 is more powerful than the 458 Lott, It kicks considerably more than a 458 Lott, It probably kills better than the 458 Lott Both are over the top on killing power IMO, thats about it in the nutshell. If recoil is "truly" not a factor then get yourself a 505 and have some fun.

I ended up getting a Lott in a Ruger 77 Magnum. Haven't gotten around yet to shooting it. I hope I can handle it. Always enjoy your thoughts Mr. Atkinson.

Good choice, plenty of bullet options and factory loaded ammo as well. I would shoot it off hand first, shooting big bore's from a bench is not fun.

If I can't shoot one off the bench rest 20 times then I don't want it..that leaves me with a 416 Rem, 404 Jefferys, 450-400 as my choice in guns...

Again I will say if you flinch off the bench, you may not feel it, but you will flinch on a buffalo! a flinch is a flinch and very hard to conquer once it starts. It's a long mental process to cure.
