my savage has the longest throat i've ever seen... 52gr speer BT's are barly hanging on! i dont want to go to heavyer bullets, and it is shooting the 7 factory loads fine..the barens tsx 53 gr mite be the ticket...any idea's , or go to the old stand by to load to .224 deep.??????
atvalaska, long throats can ruin accuracy. Maybe today, the gun will shoot fine, but put 300 rounds down the bore with the additional throat wear, and accuracy may be shot to heck.
You have a couple of very good options that are infact simple soulutions. Sierra makes a Semi point bullet in 55 and 63g that are unreal accurate bullets. The 55g Semi point bullets are great on coyotes to chucks along with the Sierra 63's.
I used the 55's and the 63's as my leaded was shot out on my 223's, 22/250's, and Swifts to be able to get up close to the lands which the gun demands to shoot tiny groups.
If the factory loads shoot well load to the same with you handloads. Don't make it complicated. My Remington 700 VLS does not care where the bullet is in relation to the lands.
i know ,i know... new set up and all...this is a pic of a "100 yd rem 50gr auc-tip" the 1st ones down the tube!....i'm a wine'r cause, i have hand loaded a long time and there is no room to play! of the 7 shots so far 2 went over the target into dirt...click, click....the next 2 "just cliped" the top of the card board, a tape mesure... and the rite amount of click's ended up where u see them ...so i took my target home.. all proud and showed it off
Obviously some gun writer, on a slow news day, peeped in the Bench Rest room and came away with the idea that you MUST load to the lands to get any sort of accuracy. And it has become the Holy Grail. But it just ain't so as proven by your target using factory ammo.
If that's three shots it is still a very good target. So many "facts" about shooting that is considered to be common knowledge is simply not true. The COAL is important in some guns but it makes NO difference in many others.
