I just got my '05 copy of the Winchester catalog. They are making a Coyote Light rifle in .325WSM, What in the world would anybody want a heaby barreled varmint gun in .325WSM for? That being said I think I might just buy one to put away as I can not see that they will make very many before they drop that chambering in that model.

the 325 WSM is on the cover.

wonder if it is of interest to anyone.

How many different bullets are there for 8mm?

I can just see Win Coyote sales skyrocketing now, because you know everyone is going to want one in 325WSM

Seriously guys -- just because "you" don't have an application for a rifle, doesn't mean others don't!

I'm seriously hoping that the introduction of this cartridge will spawn the introduction of more good 8mm bullets. If that happens, I'll be taking a serious look at one for my stable.

Muley Stalker, I am just curious who would have a use for one of these? Winchester must think someone does but I can't figure it out. This reminds me of the M70 in .358 that I bought that had a target stock on it?!?!

I'm thinking real hard about buying one myself. I've got a 300wsm and a 270wsm now. The 325 with 200gr bullets should be great for the bigger game I hope to hunt in the next few years.

Just a Guess: How about hunting from a Stand?

A lot of Big Game is taken from a Stand every year. The 325 WSM varmint model might have a market with Deer, Bear, and Hog hunting from a Stand. Especially where the range might get aout to 250 yards.

Just my W.A.G.,

Good point... But with the already proven and popular .338WM or even the old 8MM Mauser, I don't see a niche. However, just because I don't see it doesn't mean diddley.........

I think the .."They call it marketing" quote in a post above is also an excellent answer.

Just info on the placement of 325 WSM in the line.

If you look at the 300 WSM or 300 Win Mag the bullet dia is .308

Next look at next step up the current power and dia ladder and you have the stately, trusted and proven 338 Win Mag. It has a bullet dia of .338

Now .338 - .308 leaves you .030 and if you divide in half that is .015. Now either add this to .308 or substract from .338 you come to .323 .. and guess what the dia of an 8mm bullet is.

For those of you that still have Speer's manual number 9 you can go to page 300 and see the 8mm / 338 wildcat, also sometimes known as the 8mm PMM (poor man's magnum). This will give you a good idea of the performance potential of the 325 WSM since the 338 case and WSM case are near each other in internal volume.

The more things change the more they stay the same

To be honest, I don't have any use for ANY rifle with Winchester printed on the side (grin).

That said, I do believe they have some fine cartridges and with the caveats listed re: bullets, I wouldn't hesitate too long to have one built.......... on a Remington of course !

I guess what I'm saying is even though I have no use for a 45-70, it doesn't mean others don't dig the hell out of it!

Folks passionately debate all day long on the merits of .277 vs .284 or .257 vs .264 and the difference in caliber there is less than half of what it is comparing the .323 to either .308 or .338.

In the words of the masterful Big Stick, shoot what makes you grin!

Gee Dave, I'll bet you've never been accused of not having enough gun!

SU35,

Making me read and type at the same time is a challange for the ol' boy here but I will give it my best shot.

First.

Rifle is a rechambered Mil M98 with original Milatry barrel cut back to 23 inches.
Twist is 1 - 9.5

The only two bullets of intrest are the 170g and 225g

170g .. two loadings for 2940 fps
a. 64 grains IMR 4064
b. 71 grains IMR 4350

225g .. top load using IMR 4831
a. 66g IMR 4831 -- 2527 fps

I want all to keep in mind that this out of rechambered M98 with mil barrel. With new manufacture and new barrel I would not be surprised to see 100 to 150 fps increase for each of these. Ad another inch of barrel for apx 50fps more if you so choose.

The 8mm WSM (.325 WSM) is something that sure won't have much use around the Southeastern US... Well, that is if you are NOT hung up on needing much more gun than you need. About the biggest critters we face around here are deer (heavy weights are 200 lbs), hogs (heavy weights are 400 lbs), and the scarce black bear...

A .325 WSM is something that I would consider though if Elk hunting was on my list of things to do in the next couple of years...

Yet it's going to be a little hard pressed to tell the wife that I need a .325 WSM when I have a 7mm Rem Mag, a .300 Win Mag, a .270 WSM, etc...

Magnum Man- obviously you have made the mistake of actually letting your wife know how many and what kinds of guns you have. Remember, what she doesn't know can't hurt her, and wont get you in trouble.

My initial reaction is that the 325 WSM may do ok. It fills the fairly large gap between the .30 Mags and the 338s.

I'm sorry gentlemen, but I can't help myself.

I feel Winchester is missing the boat on this one. I just can't understand why they are bringing out yet another WSM when there is this serious void in cartridge design between the 308 and the 30-06 that absolutely no-one is willing to try and address. If only someone would be willing to deal with this, even if they were to make a buck or two on selling new rifles and magazine articles about those new rifles, I'd be all over it just because ....... well you know why.

Model 600s in 308 Win and 6mm Rem, nuther one rebarreled to 22-250, matched pair of Model 660's in 6.5mm Rem Mag and 350 Rem Mag, NEED a 660 in 222.
