Is it just me or would anyone else like to see this chambering in the FN M70?
I dont reckon there is much chance of it happening.

I'd be first in line to buy one, that or a 6.5x55.

Wouldn't stink, but like you said, not much chance. I think the 284 Win would be more appropriate. I'd love to see FN/Browning prop-up the 284 Win with their marketing machine. Would be very interesting!

Common sense rounds don't have much appeal in todays (stole this word from a friend) "Mall Ninja" world who think they are just slightly below the skill sets of a Navy SEAL sniper...
If folks wanted a do all light recoil deer sized game rig, they'd be hard pressed to find anything better than a 6.5x55SE or a 7x57mm...
I think the very same can be said for the 338-06 A-Square as a "Do All" North American Big Game round from deer to moose.
Common sense and today's market just seem to go together like oil and water.

I'd like to see one in .280, but that won't happen either.

I'd love a classic stocked 7x57, Model 70 or Kimber 84. Until then, the wheels keep turning on build ideas.

I got one. It's a post '64, made around 1981, featherweight with open sights. Mounted a 3x9 Leupold. Thing never shot worth a hoot, 3-4" groups at 100 yards about average.
So I tricked out the bedding by routing out the forend for an aluminum I-beam and Devcon epoxied it in, then glassed bedded the entire thing with epoxy bedding to match the stock color. Used PVC tape on the barrel to provide free float clearance. Shot a bit better but still not happy.
Turns out the barrel was a 1:12" twist. The OEM specs must have been setup for the 175 grain roundnose bullet, which will stabilize at around 2,250 fps in that twist. 150 grain Nosler BT's won't come close to stabilizing at 2,575 fps, nor will the Nosler 140 grain BT's at 2,700 fps. Few of the 7 ogive or ballistic tips, or longer form boat tails will work well in the 1:12" twist.
Upshot is that if they bring back the 7x57 Mauser, check that it has a minimum 1:10" twist barrel, or pass on it. One of these days, I'll send the thing up to Pac-Nor Barreling and have a proper 1:10" or 1:9" barrel duplicated and installed. Picky, picky, picky, but that's why I don't buy factory rifles anymore.

I wouldn't feel terribly limited shooting roundnose bullets only in that caliber. Not for what I mostly do with it.

i seriously doubt we'll see the fn m70 come out in 7x57. while it gets the job done, the 7x57 isn't flashy, isn't even close to being popular when compared to even the 7/08, and it sure isn't "new". the vast majority of gun buyers want "new" or "known". i'd say the 7x57 falls short in both catagories. exceptions noted for those on this and other like boards.

Just looked at Midway USA and have to say that I was surprised at how many factory fodder options one still has with the 7 Mauser!

Are you really serious? 100 years ago, the US was still a lever action country. 100 years ago the 7MM Mauser had killed more African Elephants than all the other cartridges put together. The 7MM outshines the 7-08 across the board.....truthfully. Regards, Rick.

have it your way... let me know when ruger/remington/winchester finally realize what a booming market awaits their replacement of the 7-08 with the mauser round...
the 7-08 sells 20-1 over the mauser... the .308 sells 4-1 over the 7-08... the 30-06 outsells all of them combined... swim hard.....

I like 7 Mauser. If you don't, don't buy one. i don't think that anyone in particular dislikes the mauser... it just does not and will not make sense to manufacture it on a regular production basis.... it will not sell outside of the rifle loony market which is comparatively minute.... 100 years ago the 7MM Mauser had killed more African Elephants than all the other cartridges put together. The 7MM outshines the 7-08 across the board.....truthfully. Regards, Rick. an earlier mention was made of the "mall ninja" phenomenon... where is anyone taking a 7 mauser today to shoot elephants??? and exactly, in practical hunting terms (this being the hunting rifle forum and all), what will the mauser round do, that the 7-08 will not??? and i'm not trying to be a dickhead, here... i don't use either cartridge, although i have some history with both... i simply can not see the push to have the manufacturers, and winchester in particular, vary from what looks like a sound business principle.. as in, "make what sells"..... if i felt the need today for a 7X57 chambered rifle, i'd simply contact one of the reputable barrel makers who would have a barrel in my hands in a matter of weeks... i'd have a good smith chamber it, cut it to proper length, and fit it to the rifle of my choice.... just like any of the other "rifle loony " specials in my cabinet....

Yeah, or buy a Savage (there I go again) and screw a 7x57 barrel on it. I really like the 7x57 because it's so cute and balanced. The reason there are so many other cartridges is marketing, doofuses behind the gun counter selling what's the current fad, and the gun press that has to stir the pot. I think I'll get a new 6.5 Creedmore, it's gotta be better than the old 260 Remington, right? We know the 6.5x55 is totally obsolete and underpowered, not good for anything. We know this even though all three are ballistically the same.
It's all marketing, nothing more than hype designed to sell guns, ammo and reloading supplies. Wait a minute! That's not a bad thing, keeps the industry strong. Forget about everything I said.
