7mm, better ballistic coefficients. Beyond that, peeling down the hairs...

Peeling hairs is right....I dont think one could go wrong with any one of them. I dont think any deer could tell a difference either. Dead is Dead...

If I was going to pick one for everything from antelope to elk at long ranges, my choice would definately be one of the 7mm Mags.

Here's some comparative calculations. I used Barnes XLC, 24" barrels, and kept pressures under 65k for all three.

Trajectory and energy are not significantly different.

Code

Gun / Ammunition : .30-06 Spring.
Bullet : .308, 165, BAR 'XLC' BT 30857
Powder: 58.5 gr W760
Pressure: 63,795 lbs-psi
Bullet weight : 165 grains or 10.69 grams

zero range set to (X)=261 Yds. and max. ordinate above LOS at range (M)=150 Yds.

Sight-in clicks, 1 click = 2.66 cm/100 yd. or 1.047 in/100 yd.

Flip a coin.... Just pick one and go. The difference between the three is so small that 95% of the shooters will never shoot well enough to see it.

I suppose if it were elk or moose, I'd want a bit more juice/bullet weight than a .270... Then again, I've never been elk or moose hunting. Hit the beast in the right place and it probably won't know the difference.

You cant go wrong with any of them so look around and when you find the rifle you like in one of those three calibers buy it. You will have made the right choice. I have rifles in 7mm and 270, the 7mm get used the most but thats just me. I dont own a 06 or any cartriges based off the 06.

I like the 270.

As for MOA's comment - the only part I don't like about threads like this is when members open them just to comment how tired they are of them.... If you don't care for it, don't open it!!!!

I agree with Nebraska. This may be an old topic for alot of us, but for someone just getting into guns and/or hunting, it could be really helpful. Remember- there are no stupid questions, if it's boring to you, just ignore it.

I have used all three a lot. You could hunt for decades with any of the three, in North America or Africa, and never be able to tell the difference, especially with today's bullets.

I travel a lot so use the '06 when doing that, as if something happens '06 ammo is available about any place you can buy ammo on the planet. This is not alwasy true for the .270 or 7mm. But aside from that they all work on anything up to moose and eland if pointed properly.

Personally I would go with the 7 mag. But I like those belted cartridges (let's see who's panites get bundled over that comment ).

Seriously ... choosing the cartridge between those three, I would use the highly scientific method of .... eenie meenie miney moe ....

30-06 if only one is going home with you. If you handload there are more components available for it, particularly bullets. There is a wider range of bullet weights readily available from around 110 or less to 220 grains or more. Its not finicky to reload, not that the others mentioned are but the '06 tends to have nicely consistant accuracy. I've heard more stories from guys with accuracy problems with the other calibers you are considering than 30-06's. That not a scientific study just my observation.

In factory ammo, it will ususally be available even at most Quick Shops and gas stations and even though the others are also common, if I had to bet the caliber I could most often find anywhere, I'd pick the '06.

Lastly no one takes issue with an '06 for most any game discussed. If you can shoot a 30-06 well, and they are easy to shoot, you are considered proficient for most any game on earth, or at least North America. It has a well deserved reputation for getting the job done.

If you want something different fine. I did when I bought my first high power and went with a 7MM Rem Mag. A fine gun but the recoil and barrel erosion are worse than an '06. Now I have a couple of 270's, too. Also fine calibers. If I were to go after elk or larger and the choice was between my 270's or an '06 (I have 4 of those) the '06 would come on that trip because of the advantage in ammo selection. That's just the way I would look at it.

There is no bad choice between these three calibers so you won't be wrong regardless of what you choose. Good luck on finding that right gun for you and good hunting!!

Add the .280 to that mix and you'll be in the same predicament, I was in a while back. I like them all, and agree that it's splitting hairs. I chose them all. Over the years, I've added to those, which I call the big three, the 30/06, .270 and .280. Of the three, I think I choose the .280 more often than the others, can't really say why. I also added a 7mm-08 and my new favorite, the .260. They all work well, it's just nice we don't have to choose unless we want to.
If stuck and had to keep only one, I would guess, that it would be between the .260 and .280, they're awesome rounds.
