Genleman,
I agree the top has discussed, cussed snd discussed some more and I agrre choose the one hat rings your bell the most. I just took a 380 class bull elk at 40 yards with an 06. One shot one dead Bull. Any of the three would have done the same. I own an 06, getting another on Saturday and a 270WSM 10 minutes after that. The 06 is an A3-03 custom and the 270wsm a Mod. 70. I will use ethier or any of my rifles for Elk to Antelope interchangeably and never be undergunned. Like the man said," Dead is Dead.

WisconsinRedneck.
I geuss that I've never had or loaded for a 06 so I never put to gether that the 270 was a necked down 06. Now I'm going to have to get rid of the 270 . Thats to bad I kind of liked that rifle.

The 7mm rem mag is superfluous, go with the 270 for most stuff or the 30-06 if you after after elk and the like. Yes, I own a 7mm rm, it is propably the most expensive rifle I own but I really do not see what it can do that at 270 or 30-06 can not. really, if I need more gun than a 270, then I am looking at a 180 gr bullet from a 30 cal. the only deer I have had to shoot more than once was my finest buck, I had to shoot him three time, all in the boiler room - and he was still not dead, with a 7mm rem mag. the first shot, straight on at 80 yards, the second at 20 feet as he tried to get up and run and then a third to get him down. still, he blinked when I put the barrel to his eye. at that point, I just backed off and waited a bit. it was late, the woods were thick and I was not about to let him run off so I could blood trail him later.

The campfire is full of bold statements today. Ain't much none of the three won't dispatch ... but as you said, if the .270 can't do it (or your not comfortable with it doing it) go to the 30 cal 180 grainers?? Why not the 7 mag and get the best of both worlds ... 120 gr to 170 grain projectiles.

If I were limited to one rifle and for some God know reason it couldn't be a 300 WBY, it would be a 7mm RM (or 7mm WBY). Fortunately this is not the case.

I've always thought a 175gr Partition from a 7mm wby or even a 7mm rm would be some sweet elk medicine.

WisRed. - I thought that too, and asked about the 175 7mms on this website. Several prominent members were not very impressed with their performance on critters. Apparently the sectional density is too high, and they penetrate too much. I don't have any experience with these bullets, but was surprised by the responses.

I've also hunted with all three. I went from a 30-06 to a 270 to my current 7mm Rem mag. All three are excellent cartridges. At practical hunting ranges there isnt ten cents difference between any of them. More choice of bullet weight with 30-06 and 7mm mag, but then, all you really need with the 270 is 130, 140, and 150 grain bullets. I admit, I love my 7 mag. Awesome western cartridge, but then, so are the others.

I am not an elk hunter, but the guys who do hunt elk with the 7 mag I believe get great results with the 160 grain bullets.

I've used each of the calibers mentioned. Now only the 270, and in a light weight rifle. It will do the job on an elk, and I have used it on larger animals.

I think it comes down to how you play pool. If you shoot really soft, go with a .270. If you're a guy who tries to shatter the cue ball with every shot, go with a 7mm. If you possess finesse and skill on both ends of the spectrum, you NEED a .30-06. the vibes will be right. (tongue in cheek, firmly)

I agree that all three are adequate. With that said I would have to say for elk the better one would be the 06 due to the fact of many different bullet weights to choose from. I go for the heavy side on most occasions. That allows me to poke a whole in them from many angles. By the way I used my 7 rem this year. HHMMM!

I have one of each, I like them all. Especially when you handload, I can't imagine what one would do that the others could not with a change in bullet weight.
