Recently acquired 340 needs a complete front sight. Seems someone did a Bubba and put on a ramp that is only held by 1 screw. The sight is to big for the ramp (sight is marked 260) and it moves somewhat freely in the dovetail. I have searched the internet without any success. Anyone have any info on where I might obtain a front ramp and sight for this rifle? The holes on the barrel are spaced approx 1.855" apart. The overall length of the ramp would be 2.245" based on the scuffs in the blue.

Also interested in a peep sight. Found references to a "Savage 175" that would fit. Are there any others? Thanks.

Ramp and blade on the 340's are one piece. Just checked Numrich and they're not showing any. What caliber 340 do you have? Does it have a serial number? I don't quite follow the sight being to big for the ramp, if it's loose in the dovetail. A loose fit can be cured by slightly peening the edges of the dovetail.

The base dovetail is buggered up and the sight is too long for the base (it sticks out past the base edges). The extra sharp edges were awfully hard on my cloth gun case. I pulled the rifle out at the range today and heard the case lining rip. eek I have to assume these are not original to the rifle. The current base has one screw, the barrel has 2 holes. The barrel also shows wear were the original sight must have been. With some minor work I could get by with this set up, but was hoping to return it to original.

The Dockendorff rear sight may be original. I don't like it much and would like to find a type that uses an elevator for adjustment.

Would a peep marked "WFC CO. NO 175" fit the D&T holes?

No Serial Number, 30-30 cal.

Is the left rear of your receiver D&T? If so, you have the option of a peep sight also.

It is D&T for a peep, not scope mount. Early one from what I've found. Later ones D&T for both and the stock modified for the scope mount. Would like a peep and was told a "WFC CO. NO 175" might be the one made for these. Is this correct?

Not certain about the WCF CO NO 175, but Williams still makes a fool proof peep sight for your rifle.

Lyman 40SS will work, nice sight. The WCF 175 is a stamped steel, swing-away arrangement. Works, I suppose, but bulky and invariably has a rough rust finish.

Thanks everyone. Seems I missed a Williams on e-bay. cry Will keep watching for the Williams or Lyman. If none turn up soon I'll order a new one. I'm confident a front sight will turn up somewhere. A fabrication will be in order if not. grin

Rob,

Thw WFC 175 should fit your rifle. Sorta looks like the Mossberg peep sight found on their 22 rifles from the 30's, 40's. You'll also see sights marked WFC 150. They won't fit.

Looking at the pic that boswellbuckhunter posted, you will most likely need a different height front sight if you use a peep in the rear. Williams makes several different front ramps that are dovetailed for a 3/8" sight. You could install a barrel band front sight base also. There are some here. http://www.newenglandcustomgun.com

Be careful with the Lyman #40. 2 versions, one for the Savage Sporter/Super Sporter (40/45) and one for the 340. Just enough difference that they won't interchange. Someone with a little more knowledge would know if they are marked accordingly. (I don't have my Stroebel's here)

I just picked my 3030 up and shouldered it. It comes up nice,....but I can't get past the looks of it, I'm all about originality, but if that front sight was not on there it would look way better. Needs a scope. Nobody made a mount for one?
This gun had a couple tinny mounts hangin out with it and I couldn't see how they would work. the peepsight screws been turned, but...

My kid is 8 and picked the Savage pistols book last night to look at. Then the Madis Book, the Winchester Book, which has only Black and White,....boring..lol.

I was wrong, and gnoahhh has it right. Lyman 40 will not fit is many cases.

- Lyman "40S" has screw hole spacing of ~0.650". As the box reads, "Stevens 322 and 325...", which are not the same rifle in every way as the Savage 340. I don't know if the "40SS" (double "S") has a different spacing; can't find the sight.

- WFC 175 has screw hole spacing of ~0.910".

- My Savage 340 22Hornet has receiver sight screw hole spacing of ~0.910".

Your rifle is likely 0.910", too.

My Boone scope mount is stamped 325 but it measures 0.910 and fits the 340 perfectly.

Have not settled on anything yet. Hole spacing is .910. No hurry, I'll find something at a show or elsewhere. That Boone scope is neat. If I run across one someday I may pick it up. Thanks RandyS and gnoahhh for your posts. I read somewhere that the Savage Super Sporter and Stevens models accepted different sights. Thanks to all for your input. I'll post pics when I settle on something.

I am a little late to the game, 14yrs at is turns out on this thread but alot of great information here!
I was hoping to revisit the topic if possible. If i am correct in summary (as i am also looking for a quality peep sight for my Savage 340 chambered in 3030) the WFC 175 is what i should be looking for and the spacing on the factory? tapping is 0.910? Or are there also other alternative that may work as well?
Thank you in advance.

IMO the Lyman 40SS and Williams 340FP are superior to the factory receiver sight options.
