hey guys, i have recently come into possession of a Drilling type rifle. it is a 16gax16gax9.3x72NORM. that is what the stamps say anyways. i am curious about the rifle caliber. i have never heard of a 9.3x72NORM, i know there is a 9.3x72Rmm, and a 9.3x72Rmm Sauer, but thats where i get lost.
anybody have some info on this that might help me?
FWIW it has the opening bar under the trigger guard, and exposed hammers, and the engraving on the top says "H. Schwartz Bern"
i will post pics in a while

A quick check of Dr. Howell's book show only 9.3x72mm Rimmed with two drawings of very slight variations dimensionally. One is attributed as CIP maximum dimension, and the as spec'd by RCBS.
Not sure if that helps at all.

It might mean 9.3x72 NORMAL, which would mean a .366 bore rather than a .358 bore sometimes found on 9.3x72 chambered rifles. Does the caliber stamping match the rest of the markings? It might have been stamped later. What do the markings on the watertable say (watertable is a term denoting the flat portion of the bar affixing the barrels to the lugs; just detach the barrels and turn them upside down and you should see the markings; they should tell you what bullet weight (in grams) and bore diameter you have for the rifle barrel). Before you do anything I would have a chamber cast made so you can determine exactly what chambering you have; also have the bore slugged to determine the exact diameter. There are more variations in continental bores than there are in Denny's continental breakfast lineup, so doing a full evaluation of the gun's dimensions is key. Does your drilling look like this? This is an old 16x16x9.3x72 I had that I traded to Mule Deer a couple years ago; neat old gun.

... Drilling type rifle. it is a 16gax16gax9.3x72NORM. that is what the stamps say anyways. Apparently it means that the rifled barrel was chambered in conformity with the German specifications of the time for the 9,3x72 R. The following link shows several 9,3x72 R cartridges which are head stamped with an "N" or with "NORM". http://www.municion.org/9_3x72r/9_3x72r.htm
Is it too ambitious or too naive to look for an honest politician? Or simply a useful one?

Yup, they're commonly called "Guild Guns" and were marketed under a number of different names. Mine was unmarked except for the watertable markings.

Interesting project. Looks to be in good shape, but of course it needs a chamber cast and bore slugging, as Oregon 45 said. The shotgun chambers are also probably non-standard length as well, so have those checked at the same time. You will find that somewhat more interesting to handload, as compared to a .30-06

i was thinking the same thing Tex... i want to buy some 16ga brass hulls and some brass for the rifle. i will contact my gunsmith and ask him to see how much a slugging and a chamber cast will be.

I've been playing with a similar drilling in 9.3x72D.I can't seem to get my search function working, but if you can look up that thread you'll find a lot of info that may prove helpful. Basically I found that there are at least eight different 9.3 x 72 cartridges, most of which, but not all,are interchangeable. You might want to contact the diemaker CH-4D.....you can google him up.Not only can he supply the correct dies,he's a wealth of info on the subject of 9.3x72 cartridges, having played with dozens of them over the years. It's really important to get that barrel slugged and a chamber cast would be a real good idea as well. Most of these variations fall in between the 30/30 and the .35 Remington in power.

If the shotgun chambers are 2.5" you can find plastic hulls in that length, or trime standard hulls to fit.
