I am interested in darkening the stainless barrels on two guns. One is a Kimber Montana 8400 and the other is a rebarreled Ruger #3. The Ruger has a chromemoly receiver and a stainless barrel. This gives me two different colors and two different steels. Does anyone have experience bluing stainless? Have you used Oxynate No. 84? How successful can one be matching the two steels on the same rifle?

Stainless cannot be blued in the same manner as CM steel. There are chemical processes that will approximate bluing but I am unfamiliar with them. Perhaps this link will help. http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=245656

Stainless CAN be blued, or more correctly, black oxided. Do a search for "UNICO of Milwaukee" they have done several for me.

I,too, would like to see them. I know very little about the black oxide process for stainless but I do know that normal bluing is really an oxidation process. Salts and all. Thanks Any body else know of this?

Stainless CAN be blued, or more correctly, black oxided. Correct...........it comes out black, not as "blue" CM. Same type of process as bluing, different salt makeup. MM

These guys might be able to help answer your questions. I've never tried their blackening of stainless though. http://www.robarguns.com/additional_finishes.htm

If you want the parts to have colors match then hit the whole thing with Gunkote or similar and stay away from spray can versions. Garand gas cylinders were stainless and blackened: http://www.fulton-armory.com/CylCoat.htm

Black-T is the option I selected to refinish my high gloss blued action with a matte stainless barrel. For the cost approximate $200, they applied the finish to the barreled action, all bolt parts inside and out, scope mounts and rings. Amazing matte black finish. Finished the project off by mounting it in a stock refinnished by CS sports dark grey base with light grey spider webbing.

How has the finish held up over time? Scratch easily? Got pics you would share? Thanks, Erich

My picture taking skills never do justice but I will try. Here is a link to a review. Tough to find a high quality photo of Black-T on a rifle, mostly hand guns. http://www.snipercentral.com/birdsong.htm
