You'll not beat the 7mm version.

Unless of course you go with a 6.5..... . I've kind of got a renob right now for a 260 as if you can't tell...grin Dober

I was gonna mention that the 6.5mm version will beat it also. Both bookends are better for what appears to be a shooting piece.

well i have a 7-08 AI a 6.5 x 284 and a 7-08 rem , was looking to try something new po ackley's book talks about a 27-08 producing velocity equal to the 270 win and thought it would be cool to try something very few people have . I love the 7-08 ai and the 6.5x284

Think a 27-350 Remington Magnum would be a kinda cool short action .Sounds cool anyway.

Let us know if you do it as I just started thinking about the same thing but have no info. Good luck.

Don't compare it to a WSM and you will be fine. Splitting FINE hairs, .264, .277, .284. All good.
FWIW, my next is a 6.5.....either 08 or 47L.

P.O. Ackley often made up his information, or got it from people who made it up.
The .27-08 AI will just about duplicate the ballistics of the 7mm-08 with the same weight bullets, when both are loaded to the same pressure.

I started to build a Sav. M-99F into a 270/308, but instead just ran a .284 Reamer in it, and got the same result but with the option of factory ammo..I believe that to be a better option unless one just wants a wildcat to tinker with..Wildcatting was fun, but its and expensive option in every respect.

I have a 27/308 AI built on a Remington model 7 action. The configuation that I have is the 27/308 AI with the 30 degree shoulder. I bought this rifle from a gunsmith who put it together and stuffed it in his safe until he got hard up for some money. I was never a fan of the 27 cal. rifles. But I figured what the heck, time for a new play toy. I bought the rifle 5 years ago; immediately my son confiscated it and I never got a chance to hunt with it until this fall when I harvested a nice boar that went about 180 lbs. So far it has accounted for 3 deer and 2 boars, the largest weighing close to 400 pounds. All have been 1 shot kills. I have been more than impressed with the accuracy and the stopping power. I shoot Sierra 130 gr. spitzers out of it, but I have never cronographed it. This caliber has made a believer out of me. I have always been a 30 caliber fan but sometimes you have to try something new. Any further questions just let me know.

For many years I had a 270-308 on a Rem SA- liked it a lot and shot many blacktails with it. Don't remember the weight of the Douglas barrel but it was 22" and about the same as the Lilja #2. When it was over the hill I rebarreled it with a takeoff barrel in 708AI, hardly ever use it anymore.
I got 3040 with the 270-308 using 4350 and long case life.
I have RCBS dies but had to ream them out a bit.

At the end of the day you still have to buy bullets, and the bullet makers have decided that the .277 is to be the designated orphan, so go forth with the knowledge that a 7-08 will be the better in most respects.
