Needed to mix up a fresh batch for supper. This probably sets the teeth of those with sophisticated tastes on edge, but we like it around here. I offer it for others of the great unwashed.

1&1/2 cups mayonnaise (I usually use Miracle Whip.)
1 dill pickle minced
2 green onions minced (I didn't have any, so just chopped some yellow.)
1 T. capers chopped
1 T. fresh parsley chopped
1 T. fresh chives chopped
1 T. Dijon mustard
1 t. lemon juice
salt and pepper as you wish
Best to all, John

John you live in Iowa...I can see the point of making that for fish there....it is tasteless just like the fresh frozen Indonesian stuff they try to sell here. cry

If you left out the parsley, capers, chives and mustard, it does not sound too bad. shocked

Here is one that I have developed over the years. Most seem to like it very well. Might not suit your taste John but give it a try and see what you think.

1 cup M.whip
1 t chopped sweet pickle or drained sweet relish
1 t diced stuffed olives
1 t parsley (optional)
1 t diced capers
2 t grated onion
1/2 t mustard
1 fine chopped or grated hard boiled egg

dash garlic powder, cayenne pepper and lemon juice

Wifey makes it perfect for me with just Miracle Whip, Sweet Relish, Chopped Stuffed Olives, and a wee bit of the Olive Juice.

When we need tartar sauce fast, we just mix sweet pickle relish with Miracle Whip Light (It's all I let them have for fat). I started putting chopped capers in it a while ago. It's good either way. We always keep a jar of sweet pickle relish around just in case.

Just call it a "ramalade" instead of tarter sauce and they'll lap it up!

Kraft also has a light mayo with olive oil that is amazing. I think they may be sneaking crack or something into it it's so addictive! wink

why do they call it tartar sauce if it doesn't have any cream of tartar in it?

I just use mayo, diced dill pickle (or dill relish if I have it), some diced parsley and finely diced onion. I may add a dash of garlic powder. Mix well and chill for a couple hours to let flavors blend.

Miracle Whip - yek. That brings back memories of Boy Scout camp where all sandwiches, etc. were drenched in way too much of the stuff. About the only thing I can stand it in now is macaroni salad.

oh i know.. you take 2 parts hellman's, 2 parts daisy sour cream, and 1 part horseradish, and you've got a dipping sauce that's great with anything from steaks to chips to pretzels and everything in between..

One thing you may want to try with a small side portion of any of these recipes.

Add a dash or bit more (vary to your taste, or leave out altogether)of prepared horseradish.

Ya want just a hint of it in the background of the tarter sauce.

If you don't like it or don't want to try it, that is fine it is your tarter sauce for your enjoyment after all.
